Mahomes played his college football at Texas Tech and appears to have the support of the current head coach. Joey McGuire’s Super Bowl 59 Assessment

McGuire detailed how the Chiefs would need to slow down Philadelphia Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley to win the game. McGuire’s interview in the Kansas City Star was further discussed by writer Jaylon Thompson.

“Philly is going to line up and try to run it down their throats. So the run blitzes and making good tackles on, you know, the best running back this year in the pros [Barkley] is going to be key,” he stated.

McGuire continued by explaining how he thought that the Chiefs would win the contest in what he thinks will “be a great game.”

    Super Bowl 59 Preview

Mahomes and the Chiefs take on Barkley and the Eagles on Feb. 9, 2025. The contest is a rematch of Super Bowl 57, a game where the Chiefs prevailed by a score of 38-35.

As the Chiefs also won the Super Bowl last season, a win this year against the Eagles would make NFL history as the first team in the Super Bowl era to ever win three consecutive championships.

However, the Chiefs face arguably their toughest test yet in Barkley and the Eagles. Barkley has been phenomenal in the playoffs, rushing for 442 yards and five touchdowns in only three games. As a result, as alluded to by McGuire, the Chiefs will need to make it a priority to shut down Barkley in Super Bowl 59.

Should the Chiefs win, Mahomes will be a four-time Super Bowl champion before the age of 30 years old and would unquestionably be on pace to challenge Tom Brady for his all-time record of seven Super Bowls.

In a unique situation, Brady and Kevin Burkhardt will be on the call for the big game from Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
