Titans’ strength of schedule and win/loss prediction

When it comes to the 2021 NFL schedule, the Titans sit right in the middle of the pack in terms of strength of schedule. Alongside the Seattle Seahawks, the Titans have the 16th toughest schedule in the league. What is intriguing, however, is that 11 of the 17 games come either against teams projected to win 10 or more games, or teams projected to win seven or fewer.

    Toughest opponents

The Titans’ 2021 schedule contains six games against teams projected to win double-digit games. Two of those games are against the Indianapolis Colts, who the Titans have split the series with in the last two seasons. Those two games could be crucial in deciding the AFC South this season.

The other games come against the Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers, and Kansas City Chiefs. Those matchups with the Chiefs and Bills could be crucial in deciding which team in the AFC gets that all-important bye week to open the playoffs. Tennessee has split the last two games against both teams in the last two seasons.

The games against the Rams and 49ers will be tough, as will all four games against the NFC West. Those four teams are all capable of winning 10 games, and the Titans will have to play their very best football. Another tough NFC game will be the Titans’ “17th game” against the New Orleans Saints. While the Saints are not the same without Drew Brees, they are unlikely to just roll over in 2021.

    Easiest opponents

Tennessee will face five games against teams projected with fewer than seven wins this season. Furthermore, four of those games on the Titans’ 2021 schedule come against teams in their own division.

The Titans have won the last three games against the Texans, who are a complete unknown as to what they will be in 2021. Tennessee has also won eight of the last nine meetings against Jacksonville. However, that team will look very different with Trevor Lawrence under center.

The final game of this group is against the New York Jets, who are another relative unknown in 2021. A new head coach in Robert Saleh, with a rookie QB in Zach Wilson, gives the Jets a wide range of potential outcomes. They are still an opponent the Titans should beat in 2021.

    2021 season prediction

The more you look at this 2021 schedule for the Titans, the tougher it seems to get. In addition to those six games against teams expected to win double-digit games, there are contests with the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, and the Saints. That group has a wide range of outcomes but will be difficult to beat on any given week.

This schedule really has the potential to turn into a nightmare for the Titans if things do not go their way. After making the playoffs the last two seasons, expectations are high for the Titans. Matching those expectations in 2021, however, could be extremely tough with this schedule.

    Projected 2021 record: 10-7
