After a fourth consecutive loss, the New Orleans Saints could be making a quarterback change. While Trevor Siemian has performed reasonably well (9 touchdowns, 3 interceptions) since taking over from Jameis Winston, it’s clear that the Saints need a different approach on offense. That could come from Taysom Hill. What should fantasy football managers expect if Hill is given the start?
Taysom Hill’s unorthodox NFL career
At 31 years old, Hill has started just four games at quarterback in his professional career. Still, his versatility has given us more exposure to him and plenty of insights into his style of play and fantasy value.
In the four games Hill started at QB last season, he completed 82 of 114 passing attempts for 834 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. He often relied on Michael Thomas, who had 30 receptions during that time. Now, he’ll have to prove that he can adapt in Thomas’ absence.
The aspect of Hill’s game that will intrigue fantasy managers is his rushing ability. He rushed 39 times in those four games for 209 yards and 4 touchdowns. In three of them, he had more than 10 carries.
As we’ve seen with Jalen Hurts this season, quarterbacks who can make plays with their legs are incredibly valuable. It provides a safe fantasy floor each week and can lead to productive games when combined with even a mediocre passing performance.
The Saints face an opportunistic Dallas Cowboys in Week 13
The Cowboys defense has performed well so far this season against quarterbacks. They’ve allowed the 19th-most fantasy points to the position. One area that they have been very effective in is turnovers, particularly interceptions.
Their 15 interceptions have been bettered only by the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills. Trevon Diggs has led the way with 8 picks. While he’s always liable to be beaten deep, that isn’t a huge part of Hill’s game. Diggs will look to keep his eyes on Hill when he drops back and attempt to jump any short routes.
There’s one important area in which Hill could have an advantage over Siemian.
The Cowboys’ defensive coordinator (and acting head coach with Mike McCarthy missing due to COVID-19) is Dan Quinn. Quinn was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons last season, the team which Hill faced in two of his four starts.
Should I start Hill in Week 13?
There are still question marks over whether Hill will be the starter. He’s been dealing with a foot injury, but he’s practiced in full all week. All indications and expectations are that he plays.
Saints head coach Sean Payton has yet to name his starting QB for Thursday Night Football, but if it ends up being Hill, his skill set will make him an intriguing start.
