Could The Philadelphia Eagles Trade For Myles Garrett?

The Cleveland Browns selected Garrett first overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, and he immediately established himself as one of the best defenders in the NFL. He hauled in seven sacks in 11 games as a rookie and has gotten 10 or more every year since.

He’s been named first-team All-Pro four of the last five seasons, collecting 72 of his 102.5 career sacks in that span. 2023 was Garrett’s banner year, finishing with 14 sacks, four forced fumbles, and 17 tackles for loss on his way to winning DPOY.

He followed that up with another 14 sacks and three forced fumbles and led the league with 22 tackles for loss last season.

Garrett signed a five-year, $125 million extension with Cleveland in 2020 but announced that he does not want to finish his career as a Brown.

The All-Pro released a statement on X, and speculation immediately began about where he would land. A video of Garrett pleading with the Cowboys to draft him resurfaced, and speculation ran rampant over where he could land.

A possible hang-up for any Garrett trade is his contract situation. He’s set to make $19.7 million next year but would account for $36.2 million in dead money if the Browns trade him before June 1. Graziano recently went on “Get Up” and thinks Philadelphia EVP and GM Howie Roseman could figure out how to make a deal work.

Graziano said, “I think this would fit really well with what the Eagles do and how Howie Roseman operates. Paying a premium price for a premium player. As opposed to sort of overpaying your own free agent, pay more than you think the market is worth for Josh Sweat just to keep him. You overpay to get a guy that can make a difference. That’s what they did with Saquon Barkley, and they’ve done it with others.”

Roseman has proven he’ll pay top dollar for the best player available at a given position by signing Barkley to a three-year, $37.75 million contract last offseason.

Garrett would likely command $35 million annually, making him the highest-paid defensive player. Graziano points out that the Eagles shouldn’t overpay Sweat just to keep the Super Bowl hero.

Sweat has spent his entire career in Philadelphia and was on a one-year, $10 million deal in 2024. He only had eight sacks in the regular season but 2.5 in a dominant Super Bowl 59 performance. Sweat is still 27 and should fetch a high number, but Garrett is the better investment for the Eagles to start a dynasty.
