Expectations for Green Bay vs. 49ers on Sunday Night Football?
Can the Packers march into Santa Clara and hand the 49ers their first loss of the season in Sunday Night Football tonight? After an impressive bounce-back Week 2 performance, Green Bay’s ready to put up a fight.
Who’s carrying the rock for the 49ers?
San Francisco has been dealt quite the hand at running back. After losing starting RB Raheem Mostert in Week 1 to a season-ending knee injury, things haven’t been great. Week 2’s matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles saw RBs JaMychal Hasty, Elijah Mitchell, and Trey Sermon leave the game.
Only one is expected to receive a considerable workload in Week 3 as Sermon was able to clear the concussion protocol. Hasty will sit out of tonight’s Sunday Night Football game with a left ankle injury, while Mitchell is doubtful with a right shoulder injury. It is worth noting that Mitchell did see some limited practice at the end of the week, but his role in the offense should be minimal at best.
Did the Packers shed their funk?
A Week 2 35-17 victory over the Detroit Lions is nice and all, but that’s what should have happened. Green Bay was the better team. A double-digit win should have been easy money had they not folded against New Orleans. The 49ers’ defense features a similar test to their Week 1 foe. Can Rodgers evade a stellar pass rush and move the offense down the field?
The Packers, too, suffered a loss on offense, as LT Elgton Jenkins is doubtful with an ankle injury. This means Green Bay is using Plan C to protect Rodgers’ blindside. Therefore, the Packers will need RB Aaron Jones to find some creases after an outstanding Week 2 performance of his own. The Packers’ defense can take advantage of the 49ers’ RB plight, forcing QB Jimmy Garoppolo into more passing situations, which can sometimes prove advantageous for the defense.
I project Green Bay gets it done at Levi’s Stadium in Sunday Night Football tonight. It should be a close game, with the Packers winning by 5 points or less.
