What to expect from tonight’s Steelers vs. Chargers game?
Both teams head into Sunday Night Football ready to forget their last games. The Steelers tied the Detroit Lions in Week 10 in QB Ben Roethlisberger’s COVID-19 absence. Meanwhile, the Chargers were bested at home by the Minnesota Vikings. However, with key players out for Pittsburgh’s defense, will the Chargers be able to capitalize tonight in Sunday Night Football?
Pittsburgh’s defense takes a litany of hits
In their Week 10 tie, Pittsburgh LB T.J. Watt was hurt while sacking Lions QB Jared Goff. He injured his hip and knee, and while his X-rays were negative, Watt could not get on the practice field this week. His absence will be noticeable against Chargers QB Justin Herbert, as the Steelers will be missing their best defensive player.
Herbert’s day gets a bit easier with two other All-Pros sidelined for Pittsburgh. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is on the reserve/COVID-19 list, while CB Joe Haden will miss the game with a sprained foot. After starting 4-1, the Chargers have come down to earth, losing three of their last four contests. Look for Herbert to take advantage of the weakened Steelers’ defense and challenge Pittsburgh’s offense to keep up.
The Chargers’ defensive performance will be critical tonight on Sunday Night Football
Los Angeles’ offense has taken a noticeable leap in Herbert’s second year. Yet, where the Chargers have been let down this season is on defense. Overall, the unit is in the middle of the pack in yards per game. However, they are allowing opponents to rush for a league-high 155.1 yards per game. Steelers RB Najee Harris continues to fuel Pittsburgh’s offense during their 4-0-1 run.
The Chargers should be able to score points easily given the Steelers’ absences. Regardless, whether it’s a necessity or not depends on how well Los Angeles can contain Harris. If Pittsburgh’s rookie RB is running wild, this game could end up in a shootout. I trust Herbert more than I trust a struggling Roethlisberger in Sunday Night Football tonight.
