In a super competitive NFC North, the Green Bay Packers must find a way to improve. The Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings put up incredible seasons, and the Packers need to reach their level. Examining their roster to determine ways to improve is at the top of the list in the offseason.
One player who might be on their way out of Green Bay, Wisc., is their star cornerback, Jaire Alexander.

Jaire Alexander’s Uncertain Future With Green Bay
Alexander has had a tough time staying healthy over the last two seasons. Alexander appeared in seven of 17 regular-season games for the second straight season. After Nov. 17, he did not appear in a game for the rest of the season. He was able to practice every so often in hopes of making a return. Unfortunately for him and the team, though, he couldn’t return.
During the last week of the season, the Packers eliminated all chances by placing Alexander on injured reserve with a PCL injury. He underwent surgery and faces a long road to recovery.
Because of this injury and his past of being frequently unavailable, his future in Green Bay is up in the air. There are reportedly “strong indications” that Alexander’s tenure with the Packers will end before he steps on the field again, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky. Multiple team sources have privately expressed their frustration with Alexander’s injury problems.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst was not willing to say that Alexander will be on the roster next season. Shortly after their playoff elimination, Gutekunst hinted that this might be the end of Alexander’s tenure as a Packer.
“I know it’s been really, really frustrating for not only him as a player but us as a club,” Gutekunst said. “When you have a player who’s done what he’s done for us in the past, and then not being able to get him out on the field consistently, that’s tough. You know it’s tough on the player, tough on the organization.”
At the end of the day, teams have to do what’s best for the team. While Alexander has been a great asset for Green Bay, his unavailability is hurting the team. Gutekunst acknowledged it isn’t an easy situation for Alexander, but the Packers are also in a tough spot.

The Packers can pick up some cap space if they cut Alexander. If designated as a post-June 1 release, about $17 million will be freed up for spending. This is an intriguing option for Green Bay as it does need to improve to compete with the top dogs of the NFC. Alexander, when healthy, is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL but for his hefty price tag and inability to stay on the field, his time in Green Bay could be over.
Alexander would become a big prize on the free agent market if the Packers released him. He is only 28 years old, and if he does find a way to stay healthy, he could be a huge piece to a contending team. His market will be interesting because of his injury problems, but it will certainly be a story to watch as the offseason kicks into full swing.
