Every team in the NFL can use a savvy veteran in their secondary, and with Stephon Gilmore still available in the open market, 32 teams still have a chance to add one. The former NFL Defensive Player of the Year has been a steady presence throughout his career, but as the 2024 season approaches, he is dealing with injuries and uncertainty.
We discuss some fits that may make sense for Gilmore’s next NFL stop.
Stephon Gilmore Free Agency Landing Spots
Staying in Big D
When it comes to free agency, just how far the Dallas Cowboys are willing to spend is always a huge question. A team that is frugal, to say the least, may determine that getting another year of Gilmore will come down to cost more than want.
Gilmore was a welcomed addition to the Cowboys’ defense in 2023 and played a pivotal role for the team, especially following Trevon Diggs’ torn ACL. However, Gilmore needed to have shoulder surgery this offseason, so his rehab and financial demands may complicate things.
If they find a middle ground financially, and the team is comfortable with his rehab process, this seems like a highly likely scenario to monitor.
Lions Fill a Need
Despite having Cameron Sutton and adding Carlton Davis, the Lions could benefit from getting another veteran cornerback into the mix. The Lions are a team that is dangerously close to being a consistent Super Bowl contender and are adding talent to their roster like a team gearing up for a serious championship run.
Gilmore may be a role player in this scenario, or maybe he unseats someone else for a starting job. Either way, the Lions have a young, talented defense, and adding more reliable veterans on the back end can only improve their chances of getting over the hump in 2024.
Vikings Need All the CB Help They Can Get
With the way the Vikings’ roster is set up right now, a cornerback is not only in play in the first round, but the position may be the odds-on favorite for Minnesota to target come late April.
The Vikings certainly could use the services of Gilmore in 2024, and there is a chance he would be able to come in and be a Day 1 starter.
Adding Gilmore via free agency and then pairing him with a top-end rookie cornerback such as Toledo’s Quinyon Mitchell or Alabama’s Terrion Arnold will enable the Vikings to completely change the look of their secondary in one offseason.
