Stefon Diggs is headed to the Houston Texans after the franchise completed a blockbuster deal to acquire the star wide receiver from the Buffalo Bills. Let’s take a look at some of the winners and losers from the trade.
Winners From the Stefon Diggs Trade
Houston Texans
There’s no doubt Houston got better with this move, adding to an already solid core of offensive playmakers with a bona fide star who has gone for 1,000+ receiving yards in each of the last six seasons.
Pairing Diggs with Tank Dell and Nico Collins provides the Texans with arguably the best trio of wide receivers in the NFL and a group that should give opposing defenses nightmares in 2024.
Accomplishing that while C.J. Stroud is still on his cheap rookie contract makes the move all the more savvy as well, with the Texans looking to maximize the talent around their franchise quarterback while it still has the financial flexibility to do so.
The only major concern here is whether Diggs’ notorious antics become a detriment in the locker room.
C.J. Stroud
Stroud is a big winner of this deal as well, gaining another weapon to work with as he aims to avoid a sophomore slump after bursting onto the scene with one of the best rookie seasons for a quarterback in some time.
Stroud threw for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and five interceptions across 15 regular-season starts and could let it rip even more in 2024 with another dynamic playmaker at his disposal.
He and the Texans do not face an easy path to building on or even replicating last year’s surprising resurgence. However, the franchise’s big additions this offseason point to some positive prospects if all goes to plan.
Losers From the Diggs Trade
Buffalo Bills
It’s certainly a win for the Bills to no longer have to worry about Diggs’ off-the-field antics, but it’s a clear loss for the franchise on the field that leaves a gaping hole at wide receiver.
Buffalo could target replacements among the remaining free agents, the trade market, or even the draft, but finding another player of that caliber is certainly no small task.
How this impacts the Bills’ chances of contention remains to be seen, but it certainly looks like a sizable blow in the interim.
Stefon Diggs
The deal is a win for Diggs in terms of getting a fresh start after expressing some clear unhappiness in Buffalo at times. Still, he falls among the losers due to what the deal says about how the Bills regard him.
Buffalo shipped him off without acquiring a pick in this year’s draft and face significant dead cap in the deal, indicating they may have tired of his presence in the locker room and might feel his on-field play is set to decline as well.
Although Diggs’ reputation is nothing new, the way this deal makes him look when reading between the lines does not bode well for his future.
Tank Dell’s Fantasy Value
Although Tank Dell could benefit football-wise from playing alongside a player of Diggs’ caliber and, thus, face some easier matchups occasionally, it seems inevitable that his fantasy value will decline with plenty of targets going Diggs’ way.
There are only so many touches to go around, and Dell could see his production dip a bit in 2024 due to having fewer opportunities — even if it amounts to a better all-around offense for the Texans.
