Should I Draft Stefon Diggs or DK Metcalf in Fantasy Football This Year?

    Published on

Both Stefon Diggs and DK Metcalf are wide receivers ranked outside the top 20, but coming off solid seasons. Who should be the pick for fantasy managers?

Both Stefon Diggs and DK Metcalf are coming off solid seasons in 2023. But while Diggs has moved on from the Buffalo Bills to the Houston Texans, Metcalf gets to be the main receiver again with the Seattle Seahawks.

So, which player should fantasy managers feel is in a better position to succeed in 2024? Here is the outlook for each player in the upcoming season.

2024 Fantasy Outlook for Stefon Diggs

Diggs is the No. 30 wide receiver in Pro Football Network’s consensus fantasy football rankings.

Diggs had a good season in 2023, but it’s clear that he is in the declining stage of his career. Even though Diggs had almost 1,200 receiving yards (1,183) last season, that was his lowest total since 2019 (1,130).

Diggs remained a favorite of Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen, with 160 targets last season, the fourth straight season he was targeted at least 150 times.

Diggs was ranked in the top 15 in both fantasy points per game (16.1, 14th) and total fantasy points (273.8, ninth).

But after nine NFL seasons and now in his 30s (Diggs turns 31 in November), Diggs was traded to the Texans, where he gets to catch passes from one of the elite young quarterbacks in the NFL in C.J. Stroud.

However, the Texans appear loaded offensively on paper, with fellow wide receivers Nico Collins and Tank Dell, along with running back Joe Mixon.

With opportunities for more players on the field, expecting Diggs to put up top-15 or even top-20 numbers may be asking too much.

2024 Fantasy Outlook for DK Metcalf

Metcalf comes in as the WR26 on PFN’s consensus rankings. He enjoyed another Pro Bowl season in 2023, and he figures to be the main target for quarterback Geno Smith this season.

However, although he was targeted 119 times in 16 games last season, Metcalf’s 66 receptions were his lowest since his rookie season of 2019. His catch percentage of 55.5% was also a career low.

The flip side was that Metcalf had his best season catching the deep ball. He averaged a career-high 16.9 yards per reception, which was the fourth-highest average among players who had at least 50 receptions last season.

Despite his low receptions total, Metcalf was still able to gain 1,114 yards receiving, the second-highest total of his career.

And although his 14.1 fantasy points per game average only ranked 23rd, Metcalf was at least a consistent performer week in and week out. He scored at least 10 fantasy points in 13 out of 16 games last season and had six games with at least 15 points.

Who Should I Draft in 2024?

Age and a lot of talent on the field may prove to be a detriment for Diggs to even match last season’s fantasy results. Metcalf, meanwhile, can at least be depended on to put up numbers similar to last season, if not improve on those fantasy results.

Diggs is on the better team, but Metcalf is the better choice.
