The Pittsburgh Steelers had quarterbacks Justin Fields and Russell Wilson split the time under center this season, with the former leading them to a 4-2 record and the latter going 6-5.
While each finished their campaigns with a winning record, it’s quite obvious at least one of the two is walking in free agency. Few would be surprised to see Wilson and Fields take jobs elsewhere next season, especially if the Steelers don’t push to re-sign either.
If the Steelers tap the quarterback market, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported prior to the Super Bowl that the Jets plan to cut ties with Rodgers. This leaves the 41-year-old four-time MVP QB with two options: retire or find his next destination.
Steelers Predicted To Move On From 2024 QB Room in Favor of Aaron Rodgers
Assuming Rodgers decides he’s not yet done with football, PFSN’s Ben Rolfe predicts the Steelers will land him via trade.
“The Pittsburgh Steelers are far from a complete team at this point, but they were a playoff team in 2024 and should be there or there abouts again in 2025,” Rolfe wrote.
“While Rodgers ranked below Russell Wilson (and Justin Fields) in QB+ in 2024, he would give the Steelers a veteran quarterback that they could lean on. They have the pieces to be a competitive team and getting Rodgers, as well as potentially Davante Adams, could put this offense into a position where it can match the potential the defense offers.”
As for how the trade itself will look, Rolfe projects the Steelers to deal a Day 3 or possibly a late Day 2 selection to the Jets in exchange for Rodgers. He noted the Jets lack serious leverage in this situation.
With Rodgers seemingly available for trade, it only adds to the report of one NFL insider who discussed the likelihood of Wilson returning.
NFL Insider Reveals Chances Russell Wilson Returns to Pittsburgh Next Season
“It won’t be here. No chance. None,” Steelers insider Dejan Kovacevic said.
This sentiment aligns with Glazer (and Mike Tomlin’s trusted friend), who echoed a similar outlook earlier this week: “I think you’ll see a new start for Russell somewhere,” Glazer shared on Feb. 6.
Wilson displayed flashes in his short stint in Pittsburgh but lacked the consistency to secure his position as the long-term answer under center.
Despite a respectable 2024 season, rumors of strained relationships within the organization appear to have sealed his fate.
