‘Do Not Pay Russell Wilson’ – Steelers Fans React to 9x Pro Bowler’s Struggles in 29–10 Loss vs. Chiefs

Russell Wilson and the Steelers lost to the Chiefs on their home turf on Christmas Day in Week 17 -- Steel City fans reacted to Wilson's struggles.

Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers lost 29-10 on Christmas against the Kansas City Chiefs. Pittsburgh has now lost three straight games and is in danger of losing the AFC North division title to the Baltimore Ravens.

Wilson didn’t have a good game against the Chiefs, as the Steelers’ offense failed to get going against the defending Super Bowl champions. Steelers fans were furious with the quarterback’s performance and called him out on social media.

Steelers Fans React to Russell Wilson’s Performance vs. Chiefs

Wilson signed a one-year deal with Pittsburgh last offseason and is a candidate for an extension after this season. However, Steelers fans don’t want the franchise to commit their future to him, with some suggesting the franchise should start over at the quarterback position.

Here’s how they reacted after the loss against the Chiefs:

“If the Steelers pay Russell Wilson, then they deserve this trash. Horrible. Start over at QB,” said one fan.

Another fan added, “Steelers Must not pay top dollar to keep Russell Wilson … He’s a declining player with huge limitations … If he’s willing to stay with the team for a reasonable price and keep developing Justin Fields, keep him. If not, they MUST move on from him!”

“Steelers need a quarterback. Russell Wilson is not the guy,” wrote a fan.

“Really tricked some of you guys into thinking he could throw again,” said another fan.

Both Fields and Wilson will be free agents after the season. The Steelers will have to make a tough decision about who will be their quarterback in 2025, and although some fans do not want Wilson back, he remains the most likely option.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz recently suggested that the nine-time Pro Bowler could get a new deal from the Steelers, similar to Baker Mayfield’s three-year $100 million extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Wilson isn’t among the best quarterbacks in the league, but despite his shortcomings, the Steelers’ offense looked the best it has in years with him at quarterback. Pittsburgh is averaging 22.7 points per game this year, which is a big improvement from last season when they averaged just 17.9 points per game.

In his last four games, the Steelers quarterback has thrown five touchdowns and two interceptions, averaging 177.0 passing yards per game. Wilson’s recent performances might have cost him some amount that he would get after the season, but he still has time to redeem his value.

The Chiefs’ Defense Dominated Without Chris Jones

The Chiefs are peaking at the right moment. With the win against the Steelers, they have secured the first seed in the AFC. This will allow an extended rest period for players like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones.

Jones did not play against the Steelers due to a calf issue. The Chiefs’ defense was expected to struggle without their superstar defensive tackle. Surprisingly, Kansas City’s defense played one of its best games of the season in Pittsburgh.

They sacked Wilson five times and also recorded an interception. The Chiefs’ run defense did struggle without Jones, as they allowed 6.5 yards per carry, but they compensated for it with their pass defense.

In their last four games, Kansas City’s defense has given up an average of just over 13 points per game. In this run, they have also recorded 15 sacks and seven interceptions. Since the Chiefs now also have home-field advantage for the playoffs, it will be hard for any team in the AFC to stop them from making a third straight Super Bowl.
