DK Metcalf must have had the time of his life when one of his biggest wishes was fulfilled. The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired Metcalf and signed him to a four-year, $132 million contract extension in exchange for a 2025 second-round draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks.
According to some, this was a hefty price tag for the Steelers, leaving fans divided. While opinions swirled online, one Steelers legend believes the deal could be a big win for Pittsburgh. He also expressed his excitement at seeing the two-time Pro Bowler represent his former team.

Ben Roethlisberger Fired Up for Steelers Following DK Metcalf Trade
“You can see the blue skies; that’s because we got a crazy offense. In Pittsburgh, we don’t see these blue skies too often. We get winds and new signings like this in free agency, and the Steelers are making moves. It’s a special day in Pittsburgh. I was blown away when I saw that news,” Ben Roethlisberger said on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday, March 10.
The former Steelers QB was particularly happy about Metcalf signing with his former team. Pittsburgh has often been criticized for investing heavily in defense while neglecting its offense.
According to Roethlisberger, pairing Metcalf with George Pickens and Pat Freiermuth could be something special. However, that didn’t stop him from questioning one part of the Steelers’ strategy.
“That’s… and again, you hit it though, will George [Pickens] still be here? That’s gonna be the interesting thing: Are they gonna try to move him now or keep him? We talk about football, and guys have been saying the Steelers needed a No. 2 receiver. But now they got two No. 1s. I mean, is it gonna stay that way? Or what’s gonna happen? It’s interesting. I don’t know,” Roethlisberger added.
The concern among critics is that Pickens and Metcalf have similar playstyles. It remains to be seen whether Pickens fits into Pittsburgh’s long-term plans, especially as he enters the final year of his rookie contract, but even if he stays, there’s still another missing piece to the puzzle.
Roethlisberger Jokes About a Comeback
With the Steelers building a stacked offense around Pickens and Metcalf, there’s still one key position to fill — quarterback. How well this new duo performs depends largely on who is throwing them the ball. As of now, the Steelers haven’t made a decision, although there are talks ongoing with Aaron Rodgers.
Roethlisberger couldn’t resist joking about it: “If you’re looking for a guy, I might still have a couple of throws in me!”
While it’s unclear if Pickens will remain in Pittsburgh for the long haul, Steelers fans (and Roethlisberger) are fired up to see what lies ahead.
