Sources: Packers retain cornerback Rasul Douglas on three-year, $25.5 million maximum value deal

After playing well in 2021, the Green Bay Packers are expected to bring cornerback Rasul Douglas for at least the 2022 season.

The Green Bay Packers retained veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas on a three-year, $21 million contract with a maximum value of $25.5 million, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly. Douglas and the Packers maintained mutual interest throughout the process in extending their working relationship following an outstanding season, per sources.

Rasul Douglas’ impact with the Packers

Douglas was previously with the Las Vegas Raiders, Houston Texans, and Arizona Cardinals before excelling with Green Bay last season. He signed with the Packers last October when Jaire Alexander — whom the Packers want to sign to a long-term extension, per sources — went down with injury.

Douglas made a dramatic, game-sealing interception in a win over the Cardinals, picking off Kyler Murray in the end zone. In 12 games (nine starts), Douglas set career-high marks for solo tackles (52), interceptions (5), pass breakups (13), opposing quarterback rating against (51.9), and completions allowed (32).

The Philadelphia Eagles selected Douglas in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Hailing from West Virginia, he owned impressive size (6’2″, 210 pounds) and arm length (32″). He never found his footing despite seeing significant playing time in three seasons with the Eagles.

After Philly waived him, the Panthers swooped in and made him a starter in 2020. Another uninspiring campaign saw him bounce around the league with the Raiders, Texans, and Cardinals before landing with the Packers. And as they say, the rest is history.

At the end of the season, Douglas told Green Bay reporters he wanted to return to the franchise.

“Of course,” Douglas said. “I built a family here. I’ve still got some unfinished business, I feel like, to handle. Of course, I want to be here. But I don’t think that’s all my decision to make. Everything I envisioned. Not the end goal, but just my play style, opportunity, coaches, everything. It means a lot to me.”
