Slimmer Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa Talks Contract, Offseason Regimen

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa spoke with local reporters for the first time since January at his foundation's annual luau.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been a busy man in the three months since the Miami Dolphins‘ season ended.

He’s hosted events benefitting his foundation both in South Florida and back in his native Hawaii — including his third-annual luau, held here Thursday night.

He’s had a lot of dad time with his two young kids.

And, as he confirmed Thursday night, he, for the first time as a pro, has worked with a private quarterback coach: Former Dolphins QB John Beck, who has tinkered with Tagovailoa’s mechanics.

    Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa Speaks

“I think, for now, that’s all internal,” Tagovailoa said when asked to comment on social media videos showing him training with the 3DQB football training outfit in Huntington Beach, Calif. “I want to keep that between me and John. But yes, everyone, I have a quarterback coach. I am working with John Beck.”

He’s also seemingly working with a trainer and a dietician. Tagovailoa was mum Thursday about his noticeably slimmer physique.

The Dolphins still list him at 227 points, but he appears to have lost much of the 15 pounds he gained last offseason to better protect himself from injury.

Tagovailoa did provide the definitive word on one other hot-button issue: There will be no offseason holdout this season, even though he and the Dolphins have not yet come to an agreement on a contract extension.

Tua had this answer when asked where things stand with the most important negotiation of this offseason:

“I definitely knew that question was coming. Just letting my agent deal with that and talk to the team about that. For me, my focus is when OTAs come like, hey, you know, go to OTAs, show up, and be the best teammate that I can be.”

As for his goals for 2024?

“Yeah, I’ve had many goals. I’ve hit a couple of them, but outside of that, they’re all little goals that lead up to the bigger goals that I have. There’s very specific things. Am I gonna share it? Probably not.”
