NFL legend Deion Sanders’ son, Shedeur Sanders, has made quite a name for himself and is currently among the best quarterbacks in college football. Shedeur understands the pressure that comes with being the son of a legendary father who excelled in both the NFL and MLB and won two Super Bowls.
Now, following in Coach Prime’s footsteps, Shedeur has carved out his own path as the starting quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes. However, with his father as head coach, football critics often attribute Shedeur’s success to Deion’s influence. But Shedeur remains unfazed, feeling blessed to be part of the Sanders family.
Shedeus Sanders Opens Up About Life With Deion Sanders
Recently, Shedeur Sanders appeared on the “It Is What It Is” podcast and spoke about the significant role his father, Deion Sanders, has played in his life and the challenges he faces leading Colorado.
“I appreciate what he did, and I understand what comes with it. A lot of people will try to play you at your position and make you feel bad because you’re blessed in the situation, but I take full advantage of it personally, and I am thankful. You know, God put me in this situation so I’m able to use the resources and all these different types of things that I have available.”

As for those who believe his father recruited him to play for Colorado, Shedeur clarified that it was his own choice to join the program.
“But then, at the same time, he has a higher expectation than anybody in this world. So even if the world feels like I had a good game, personally, I feel like it could’ve been mid. He really didn’t even recruit me, honestly, to come play with him because he was like, ‘Look, now, this is your decision. You gotta make this decision for you.'”
Sanders, playing his second season with Colorado, is doing an exceptional job, leading his team to a 7-2 record this season. He’s proven his worth with consistent performances, taking a struggling program and turning it into a strong one.
Deion Weighs In on Shedeur’s NFL Future
With the 2025 NFL Draft on the horizon, Sanders’ name is already drawing attention from NFL teams, with many seeing him as a top first-round prospect. The Buffaloes head coach, however, has made it clear he’ll be selective about which team his son joins. Deion is determined not to let Shedeur end up with a franchise that could put his career at risk.
While appearing on Fox Sports 1’s “Speak,” Deion elaborated on what he looks for in a team his son would join.
“Someone that has had success in the past handling quarterbacks or someone and an organization that understands what they’re doing. Not just throwing you out there amongst the wolves if you don’t have the support and the infrastructure of the team.”

In Pro Football Network’s latest 2025 NFL Mock Draft, Shedeur was projected as the fifth pick to the Cleveland Browns, who are currently 2-7 this season.
“The QB with the most NFL-ready skill set currently is Shedeur Sanders. The Colorado passer is the most accurate and reliable quarterback eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft, with the ability to operate full-field reads and manipulate the middle of the field.
“Sanders doesn’t have the athletic upside of others, but his movement is underrated. Despite playing behind one of the worst offensive lines in college football, the Buffaloes QB’s pocket navigation is extremely impressive, setting him up to potentially start as a rookie.”
Who better for Cleveland than Sanders, who has turned the tides for the Buffaloes? Something the Browns desperately need to do since the disastrous Deshaun Watson situation.
So far this season, Sanders has completed 250 of 343 passes for 2,882 yards, with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions. But would his father be on board with his son joining a struggling team once again?
