Shannon Sharpe Slams Cowboys As Michael Irvin Says New HC Brian Schottenheimer Needs Divine Intervention

Shannon Sharpe nor Michael Irvin are not hopeful about the Dallas Cowboys' future under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer

The Dallas Cowboys had another disappointing campaign in 2024. They could only muster a 7-10 record, finishing third in the NFC East and failing to qualify for the playoffs. Jerry Jones then decided to fire Mike McCarthy as head coach and brought in Brian Schottenheimer as his replacement.

Former NFL star Shannon Sharpe has also been critical about his assessment of the Cowboys’ future. And on a recent episode of his show with Chad Johnson, he did not mince his words while talking about the franchise.

Shannon Sharpe Backs Michael Irvin’s Comments on the Cowboys and Harshly Criticizes the Team

On Friday’s episode of the “Nightcap” show, Shannon Sharpe discussed former Cowboys star Michael Irvin’s comments on the team’s poor performance. Irvin stated that Brian Schottenheimer will need more than his coaching abilities to turn the fortunes of the franchise.

Sharpe backed up Michael Irvin’s statement by giving his own harsh assessment of the Cowboys’ future.

“Michael Irvin says Brian Schottenheimer needs God to turn around the Cowboys. Let that sink in. One of the all-time great Cowboy players, still resides in Dallas, bleeds blue and silver, says that Brian Schottenheimer needs God to turn around Dallas.

“Yeah. And Dak (Prescott) over there talking well. Micah (Parsons) already said they are going to win the NFC next year… Cowboys are not close to the Eagles. Even the fans in Dallas know that. And deep down, the players know that. They’re not close.”

Schottenheimer has been a part of the Cowboys coaching staff since 2022. However, it will be a difficult task for him to help the team to regain its former glory in his debut season.

Three-time Super Bowl champion and former Cowboys star Emmitt Smith is less than thrilled with the direction the Cowboys went with their head coaching hire.

On Wednesday’s episode of “Unsportsmanlike” Smith raised doubts about Schottenheimer’s abilities to be the head coach of the franchise.

He felt that Schottenheimer should be given a chance to prove himself. However, for him to succeed, he must find a way to realign their commitment to the goals they have in the league.

“I know we have to give the man a chance, and I’m willing to give him a chance and opportunity to turn things around. However, if we don’t align our vision and commitment to that vision, I think we won’t get a lot of things that we’ve seen in the past and that doesn’t feel good.”

“All that talk about having a running back and a running game. There’s nothing wrong with our running game when there’s a commitment to the running game…I think we’ve gotten so far away from what we all know as the Cowboys of the great teams, so you don’t see that balance no more.”

The Cowboys made the playoffs during the 2023 season. Unfortunately, they were knocked out by the Packers in the Wild Card Round. Schottenheimer now has the responsibility to lead the franchise to its first Lombardi Trophy since their Super Bowl 30 triumph.
