The last couple of days have been a rollercoaster for the Seattle Seahawks. First, a massive change to the wide receiver room kickstarted the process. Seahawks legend Tyler Lockett was released by the team.
However, the news cycle wasn’t over as DK Metcalf demanded a trade out of Seattle, for which the team permitted him to explore options. Still, the biggest announcement was yet to drop, and it left a budding potential superstar on the squad in shock.

Geno Smith Trade Leaves Star Wide Receiver Astonished
Right after the changes to the wide receiver core, it was reported that the Seahawks were trading quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a third-round pick. Smith had spent the last six seasons with the franchise and earned two Pro Bowl selections.
What made the move even more shocking was that he was coming off a strong year where he finished fourth in the league in passing yards with 4,320 yards on an unreal 70.4% completion percentage.
His move left Jaxon Smith-Njigba in shock. The sophomore had a remarkable 2024 campaign with Smith throwing him the ball. After a pedestrian rookie season, Smith-Njigba exploded with 1,130 receiving yards and six touchdowns to his credit.
Smith-Njigba took to X with a rather hilarious tweet, writing, “Broooo I just got up … you lying.”
It was a direct reply to his brother, MLB player Canaan Smith-Njigba, who said, “Jaxon wake up you gotta see this.”
Smith-Njigba’s numbers in 2024 increased in virtually every category as he quickly became a franchise building block for the Seahawks.

However, all isn’t lost in Seattle. According to reports, help could be on its way sooner rather than later. Sam Darnold, coming off an MVP-caliber season leading the Minnesota Vikings to 14 wins, is in contention to suit up for the Seahawks.
While his career hasn’t exactly been sunshine and daisies, Darnold is coming off a season where his numbers were even better than Smith’s totals, finishing one yard shy of Smith but with 14 more touchdowns.
According to PFSN’s QB+ metric, Darnold ended the season ranked 12th among 39 qualified quarterbacks, while Smith was three spots behind at 15th. It remains to be seen if Darnold can replicate his success with the Vikings in Seattle.
However, if they get the 2024 version of the former first-round selection, their decision to move off of Smith after going 10-7 last season won’t seem as perplexing as it does in the moment.
