The Seattle Seahawks are bringing in a quarterback to compete with Geno Smith, as Adam Schefter reported that the team has traded for the Washington Commanders‘ Sam Howell.
The Seahawks are sending a third- and fifth-round pick to the Commanders for Howell and a fourth- and a sixth-round pick.
Howell showed potential last year, but the Commanders had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. He finished the year with 3,946 yards and 21 touchdowns, but he also threw 21 interceptions. Now that he is headed to Seattle, he has a chance to potentially not just be the starter this year for the Seahawks but also be their guy of the future.
Sam Howell To Compete With Geno Smith for Starting Job
Seattle has long liked QB Sam Howell. Now, with Drew Lock signing with the Giants, Howell can compete with Geno Smith for the Seahawks starting QB job. https://t.co/jN59Iv8LSN

The Seahawks have long been intrigued with Howell, and they bring him in with a chance to compete for the starting spot. Last year, Drew Lock was the backup quarterback for the Seahawks, but he recently signed with the New York Giants.
Smith has been very good for the Seahawks, as he has thrown for 7,906 yards, 50 touchdowns, and only 20 interceptions. He took them to the playoffs two years ago, but he had to battle some injuries late in the season last year. However, he will be 34 in October, and the team must consider the future.
Mike Macdonald is now the coach for the Seahawks and could be looking for his quarterback of the future. Howell will be able to come in and truly compete for the No. 1 spot, which could turn into one of the most intriguing QB battles of the offseason.
Like the Seahawks, the Commanders are bringing in a new coach in Dan Quinn. The team has the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft and figures to bring in a new quarterback.
The team has been tied to many of the top quarterbacks in this draft, and regardless of which one they take, having Howell there would only cause unwanted drama.
