Seahawks Predicted To Trade Up in 2025 NFL Draft for Preseason Heisman Favorite QB, Geno Smith’s Replacement

The Seattle Seahawks may look to add a QB on Day 2 or 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft to eventually replace veteran Geno Smith.

The Seattle Seahawks are part of one of the most balanced divisions in the NFL, the NFC West. Playing the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams, and Arizona Cardinals twice each season is not an easy task when trying to reach the postseason.

Veteran quarterback Geno Smith led the Seahawks to a respectable 10-7 record, but it wasn’t strong enough to beat out the Rams for a playoff spot. It’s far from guarantees that Smith can lead Seattle to a Super Bowl, meaning it could be a logical move to plan for the future.

Smith’s contract is up following the 2025 season, so selecting a QB in the 2025 NFL Draft could be ideal. This would allow Smith another season of starting while mentoring a newcomer before entering free agency the following summer.

Seahawks Predicted To Add Preseason Heisman Favorite QB in the NFL Draft

The Seahawks will not likely look to draft a QB at No. 18, as the only two projected to go off the board in Round 1 are Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. Its draft positioning could allow Seattle to fill other holes on the roster before turning to a QB with strong potential later.

Enter Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart, who was widely regarded as a Heisman Trophy favorite before the start of the 2024 collegiate season. While Dart did not have that caliber of a year, Pro Football Network’s Matthew Cannata predicts that selecting the 21-year-old with the No. 69 pick is a strong route to take.

In this projected selection, the Seahawks received the No. 69 pick from the New England Patriots in exchange for No. 82 and Seattle’s 2026 third-round pick.

“Jaxson Dart is a natural leader and playmaker. He is known for elevating his team with pinpoint passes, sharp reads, and trust in his receivers,” Cannata wrote. “He excels at exploiting man coverage, finding matchups, and winning 50-50 plays.”

The senior QB finished the 2024 campaign with 4,279 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and six interceptions while also picking up 495 yards and three TDs on the ground. Dart possesses many of the physical tools necessary to succeed but simply needs polishing in terms of decision-making and mechanics.

“While his game has a few flaws, he sometimes locks in downfield too long, risking ball security. Those daring throws into tight coverage might not always succeed against NFL corners, but with his full skill set, Dart has the tools to thrive at the next level,” Cannata concluded.

Allowing Dart at least one season to learn PFN’s No. 15 ranked QB, Smith, could allow him to shore up the skills he lacks as a draft prospect.
