Seahawks Predicted To Make Surprising Offseason Move, Cutting Ties With $44.5 Million Star

The Seattle Seahawks have a promising roster, but one analyst believes one star isn't good enough to win them a Super Bowl.

The Seattle Seahawks are part of one of the most balanced divisions in the NFL, the NFC West. Playing the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams, and Arizona Cardinals twice each season is not an easy task when trying to reach the postseason.

Veteran quarterback Geno Smith led the Seahawks to a respectable 10-7 record in 2024, but it wasn’t strong enough to beat out the Rams for a playoff spot. It’s far from guaranteed that Smith can lead Seattle to a Super Bowl, and one PFSN analyst boldly predicts the Seahawks will move on from this offseason.

Seahawks Projected To Move On From Geno Smith To Avoid ‘Middling’ Season

Statistically, Smith had a strong year, setting several franchise records. He completed 407 passes on 578 attempts for 4,320 yards and an impressive 70.4% completion rate. His efforts contributed to a 10-7 season, Seattle’s first double-digit win campaign since 2020, and a second-place finish in its division, tying with the Los Angeles Rams but losing out on the playoffs via tiebreaker.

However, Smith wrapped up the season ranked 15th in PFN’s QB+ metric, and his overall numbers are underwhelming. He ranked 21st in EPA/DB (0.03), 20th on third downs (37.4%), and 14th in nYPA (6.9). Smith essentially matched his 2022 level of play, yet the Seahawks missed out on the postseason.

Additionally, there are concerns over Smith’s age and staggering $44.5 million cap hit. That’s why PFSN’s Ben Rolfe predicts the Seawhaks will cut the quarterback from the squad this offseason.

“Let’s start this by saying that Geno Smith is fine as a quarterback. However, in 2025, he is set to have the eighth-highest cap hit at the position. In his three years in Seattle, Smith hasn’t graded higher than a C+ in terms of QB+. Thus, he’s a slightly above-average quarterback being paid like a borderline star in 2025.

The problem with Smith at this point is that there is no ceiling. He’s played with three good receivers for the last few years and is still only a slightly above-average QB. Plus, the Seahawks replaced their offensive coordinator, so he’ll be learning a new scheme all over again next season.

It’s a huge risk for Seattle because finding a solid quarterback in the NFL is hard. However, the Seahawks have to aim higher than middling.”

Last season, Smith finished the year with 4,320 passing yards and just 21 touchdowns. However, he also gave up 15 interceptions and finished the year with a middle-of-the-pack passer rating of 93.2; as Rolfe said, it won’t be enough for the Seahawks if they intend to win a Super Bowl.
