The five-game slate that is Friday night in college football opens up to a wonderful FanDuel DFS slate. Sorting through the rosters and projected playmakers, the San Diego State Aztecs vs. Boise State Broncos DFS picks offer warning signs everywhere. Here are the top DFS picks in one of the five matchups from Friday night.
San Diego State vs. Boise State: Top FanDuel DFS picks to target
Quarterbacks
- Taylen Green, Boise State: $8,500 – Fringe start
- Braxton Burmeister, San Diego State: $6,700 – Don’t start
Last week’s mess on offense is behind them — literally — at Boise State. After firing their offensive coordinator, the Broncos lost long-time starting quarterback Hank Bachmeier to the transfer portal in a matter of a few hours. That puts Taylen Green into the lineup on Friday night against San Diego State and puts him as a fringe-level starter in your DFS entries.
[bet-promo id=”174860″ ]In his lone extended action this year, Green was a dynamic dual-threat QB with a high floor due to his rushing ability. At 6’6″, 220 pounds, Green is a hard man to bring down, and he rushed for over 100 yards and two scores against Oregon State, giving the Beavers all they could handle in Corvallis.
Now, the offensive game plan and scheme are still very much in the air, and that aids to the waning thoughts of starting Green. If you play multiple entries, however, Green should absolutely be in one of your lineups due to that unknown nature and the fact that San Diego State’s pass defense has been a shell of what it’s looked like in years past.
Running backs
- George Holani, Boise State: $9,800 – Don’t start
- Jordan Byrd, SDSU: $7,000 – Don’t start
- Ashton Jeanty, Boise State: $6,000 – Don’t start
- Jaylon Armstead, SDSU: $5,200 – Don’t start
- Cam Davis, SDSU: $5,100 – Don’t start
Let’s face it, not one of these running backs warrants a starting spot on your DFS entry until proven otherwise. George Holani drives the high price tag because of ample opportunities — but again, a new scheme and new quarterback may limit him in the first game after firing their OC.
Jordan Byrd goes up against a Boise State run defense that allows only 3.1 yards per carry and has allowed just three rushing touchdowns in four games. Stay away from these running backs.
Wide receivers
- Latrell Caples, Boise State: $6,500 – Don’t start
- Stefan Cobbs, Boise State: $6,300 – Fringe start
- Tyrell Shavers, SDSU: $5,700 – Don’t start
- Jesse Matthews, SDSU: $5,400 – Don’t start
- Billy Bowens, Boise State: $5,300 – Don’t start
No San Diego State receiver is worthy of a start here, mainly because of the inept nature of their quarterback play. But Boise State’s pass defense is also a top-20 unit in terms of multiple pass-defense metrics as they’ve done a great job of limiting opponents through the air this season. However, the usually stout Aztec pass defense has been tested this year and given up some bad results.
They currently rank 96th nationally with 258.8 yards allowed per game through the air. They’ve also allowed 10 passing touchdowns against them and are struggling with fielding a competent starting secondary.
Green offers up intrigue with his mix of big arm and athletic ability, but which of the receivers will blossom into his top target is the real question. Stefan Cobbs was the most targeted by Green in his outing versus Oregon State, outnumbering Latrell Caples nearly two to one in terms of total targets. If you do go with a Boise State receiver, make it Cobbs.
Tight ends
- Mark Redman, SDSU: $5,200 –
- Tyneil Hopper, Boise State: $4,800 –
Similarly to the other games on Friday, each of these tight ends are best to stay away from in DFS play. Each TE is largely dependent upon touchdowns to be relevant and draw tough matchups with stout coverage linebackers. Stay away.
