Dallas Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams was arrested for possessing a controlled substance and unlawfully carrying a weapon in Frisco on Sunday night.
Details From Dallas Cowboys DE Sam Williams’ Arrest
According to the police report, Williams was pulled over for speeding, going 71 mph in a 45 mph zone. The officer also noted that William’s car had no front-mounted license plate or visible registration sticker.
When Williams was pulled over, the officer asked him for his driver’s license, insurance, and why his car didn’t have a front-mounted license plate. Williams told the officer that it was “somewhere” in his car and had been unmounted before wrapping his vehicle.
The report then states that when Williams reached for his rear compartment, he informed the officer of a weapon in the car. Upon further investigation, the officer later found a Glock 17 handgun with a round of 14 total 9mm rounds.
During the conversation, the officer smelled marijuana and asked Williams how much weed he had in the car, to which Williams responded, “None,” but that he smokes in his car since his residence doesn’t allow it. During this conversation, Williams showed the officer a plastic bottle with visible cigars floating in it.
According to the report, the officer called for backup for a probable cause search of the car. Williams consented to a search and was cleared of having contraband on him.
The officer asked Williams if there was anything besides the ashes from the cigars in the plastic bottle and the gun, to which Williams said that there could “possibly be a little weed inside.”
When they searched the car, they found a bag in his passenger seat with a “RAW” brand rolling machine, an open pack of rolling papers, and a vape. The vape had a mouthpiece with a bright yellow substance that the officer believed to be THC that weighed less than a gram.
On the rear passenger seat floorboard of the car, the officer located a small glass “ZOAP” brand container that contained green and leafy buds of marijuana, which was later weighed at 0.1270 ounces.
The officer then found the Glock 17 handgun in the rear pocket on the passenger side seat and seized all of the items.
Williams was then handcuffed and transferred to the Frisco Jail without incident.
Jerry Jones, Mike McCarthy Comment on Sam Williams
When Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked about Williams on Wednesday, he made light of the situation, saying, “This sounds a little hollow, but he does and is maturing, and he is. What was he going, 66 miles an hour? So he’s 34 miles an hour less this year than he was last year … 98 to 66. So that’s improvement.”
Jones referred to a two-car accident last December when Williams was speeding up to 98 miles per hour, leading to an arrest warrant. Both he and the other driver ended up in the hospital.
During a press conference on Thursday, head coach Mike McCarthy spoke on the recent arrest, saying that he visited with Williams and that the defensive end knows what he needs to do “so everyone can get better.”
When asked how McCarthy views this situation and if Williams needs a wake-up call, he said, “Well, I think any time you make a mistake, it’s a good wake-up call, you know, absolutely. But I believe in Sam Williams.
“Obviously did when we drafted him, and even more so now. So, I’ve seen him grow in so many different ways. He needs to slow down, and he knows that. So that’s the first step.”
