Ryan Tannehill Trade Details: Revisiting the Deal Between the Dolphins and Titans

    Published on

In March 2019, Ryan Tannehill ended up with a change of scenery. A look back at the Dolphins' trade of the former top-10 draft pick.

Ryan Tannehill has carved out a 12-season career with one Pro Bowl appearance as a former top-10 NFL Draft pick. He also guided an AFC title game run in the 2019 season for the Tennessee Titans.

But he would have never gotten to Nashville if it weren’t for a bold move involving the team that drafted him: the Miami Dolphins.

From the current NFL standings to team depth charts to coverage of every game in the 18-week NFL schedule, we have all the news from around the league to keep you up to speed!

Details of the Ryan Tannehill Trade to the Titans

In looking back at the March 15, 2019 deal, here’s what the trade entailed between the Dolphins and Titans:

    The Titans received:

    • Tannehill, signing him to a one-year deal following the trade.
    • A 2019 sixth-round draft selection, which they used on linebacker David Long.

    The Dolphins received:

    • A 2019 seventh-round selection.
    • A 2020 fourth-rounder.

Miami ended up using those picks on running back Myles Gaskin in the 2019 draft, who eventually became a brief starter. The 2020 selection was used on guard Solomon Kindley.

Gaskin has ended up with 17 starts in his five seasons in the league but is now with the Minnesota Vikings. He ended his Dolphins career with 1,355 yards and seven touchdowns. Kindley played just two seasons with Miami before joining the New York Giants as a practice squad member. He’s currently an NFL free agent.

Why Did the Dolphins Trade Tannehill?

Tannehill had begun to establish himself as a 3,000-4,000-yard passer. He managed to put together a string of those campaigns in his first four seasons in the NFL out of Texas A&M.

However, from 2016-2018, he had a hard time staying healthy. He managed to start in no more than 13 regular-season games during that timeframe.

But there’s more. Despite his early production, Tannehill never played in a single Pro Bowl with the Dolphins. He also never guided Miami to the playoffs, even during his first quartet of seasons.

Also, his production began to dip during his seven seasons. At one point, he was 20th in completion percentage, 22nd in yards per game, and 27th in quarterback rating.

But even despite his struggles, Tannehill had the hope he would remain with the Dolphins for the rest of his career.

“I love this organization. I love the guys on this team. I love competing with the guys on this team. I’ve been here my whole career and love it in South Florida; love what South Florida brings to the table. So yeah, I’d love to be here,” Tannehill told the Palm Beach Post in December 2018.

Tannehill, though, got the Titans to the AFC Championship with Derrick Henry spearheading the backfield and A.J. Brown as one of his wide receiving options. That was also in Tannehill’s lone Pro Bowl season.

The next season, Tannehill delivered his first 30-touchdown campaign by tossing 33 TDs to just seven interceptions. His numbers, though, have since dropped — 21 aerial touchdowns in 2021, just 13 in 2022, and currently, his touchdown-to-interception ratio is 2:5.

Tannehill, though, is 38-22 overall as the Titans’ starter. And even with high draft picks Will Levis and Malik Willis in the QB room, Tannehill has remained the lead quarterback in Nashville and has lasted five seasons with the Titans.
