Ryan Tannehill Free Agency Predictions: Potential Landing Spots Include Colts and Broncos

    Published on

Ryan Tannehill is far from an elite QB, but he could still hold value as a bridge or backup option for some teams. Where might he land in free agency?

Ryan Tannehill has been plagued by injury issues and inconsistent play in recent years, but he still has a track record that could leave some NFL teams interested in his services. Where might the veteran quarterback ultimately end up in free agency?

Although he’s never been among the NFL’s elite quarterbacks across his 11 playing seasons, Tannehill has put together enough production to stick around longer than many other quarterbacks.

The veteran QB’s career got out to a bumpy start with the Miami Dolphins, where he put together a few strong seasons before being moved after six years due to injury issues and inconsistency. Tannehill has since spent the last five seasons with the Tennessee Titans, to varying success.

Tannehill was named the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year in 2019 and earned a Pro Bowl nod after posting 2,742 passing yards for 22 touchdowns and six interceptions across 12 appearances, including 10 starts, in his first season with the Titans. He was again solidly productive in 2021 but saw injuries contribute to shortening both his 2022 and 2023 campaigns.

Now a free agent, it’s unclear whether Tannehill might remain in Tennessee as a likely backup option or find another situation more to his liking in a league that’s always in need of capable QBs.

    Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have who they hope is their quarterback of the future in Anthony Richardson, but injury issues kept him off the field for most of last season as Gardner Minshew took the helm. With Minshew headed to the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency, Indianapolis could use a dependable backup QB option even as it hopes to keep Richardson healthy.

If Tannehill is amenable to the role and the financials make sense, the Colts are one landing spot that could make sense for him.

    Denver Broncos

The Broncos have plenty of uncertainty at quarterback as well after releasing Russell Wilson, who quickly signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Denver likely plans to select a young quarterback in the upcoming draft, but adding the veteran as a bridge option of sorts could be appealing to both sides, with Tannehill getting another shot to show his capabilities and mentor a young signal-caller.

Tannehill would also be a good backup option to have around at the right price, even if the Broncos end up with a young QB who is ready to go early on.

    Arizona Cardinals

Although Arizona is set with Kyler Murray as the starter, with just Clayton Tune on the current depth chart, its options behind him are not great. Adding a veteran like Tannehill to back Murray up and be an option in case of injuries to the small-statured starter would make plenty of sense for both sides and give the Cardinals some insurance.

It’s unclear whether Arizona would be interested in a backup QB or is content to either stand pat or explore other options, but Tannehill is one player who could help fill the need.
