Former Patriots Star Rob Gronkowski Takes a Cheeky Dig at Patrick Mahomes During Super Bowl 59

Former NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski provided a stark analysis of Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes following the Super Bowl 59 loss.

It was a brutal night for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. In many respects, the stat line and the score do not do justice to how poorly the Chiefs played and how dominant the Eagles were. 16 of those 22 points for the Chiefs came in the fourth quarter when the game was already largely out of reach.

Following the game, former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star tight end Rob Gronkowski was blunt in his words about the Chiefs and Mahomes.

While appearing on the Fox Sports postgame show, Gronk detailed what the game plan was when his Buccaneers played Mahomes in Super Bowl 55. In that game, the Bucs defeated Mahomes and the Chiefs by a score of 31-9.

What Did Rob Gronkowski Say About Patrick Mahomes?

Though Gronk most likely did not want to be rude or take a dig at Mahomes, that is exactly how it came across to most watching the Fox broadcast. One social media user took to X to provide a transcript and analysis of what Gronk said live on air.

“Gronk cooked on the postgame ‘that’s what we did when we beat them with the Bucs just let him run all around and throw us picks’. They cut to a commercial 😩,” the post stated.

Does This Super Bowl Loss Impact Patrick Mahomes’ Legacy and Kansas City Chiefs’ Dynasty?

Mahomes and the Chiefs are deserving of high praise for their three Super Bowl titles in recent years. However, it is also fair to take into account how poorly the team has performed in the Super Bowl games they have lost.

In the two Super Bowl appearances in which they have not won, the Chiefs have been cumulatively outscored 71-31 by their opponents (Buccaneers and Eagles). Neither of those games were particularly close or looked like the Chiefs had a chance. In those contests, Mahomes threw four interceptions and was sacked nine times.

Though this game won’t drastically impact the long-term legacy of Mahomes, as he is a three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP, it hurt his chances of being viewed as the “greatest of all time.” Not only did Brady defeat Mahomes head-to-head in the Super Bowl, but his largest Super Bowl loss was only by a margin of eight points.

Mahomes is already one of the greatest players in NFL history. Yet, the Mahomes vs. Brady GOAT debate has shifted after Super Bowl 59.
