Former Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan Names Surprise Candidate Who Makes ‘Perfect Sense’ as Cowboys HC, and It’s Not Deion Sanders

The Dallas Cowboys are searching for a new head coach, and as always with “America’s Team,” the speculation is fierce. While high-profile names are all over the headlines, a surprising endorsement from former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan has introduced an unexpected candidate into the mix.

Rex Ryan’s Pick for Who Should Coach the Dallas Cowboys

Appearing on “NFL on ESPN,” Ryan made a compelling case for Washington Commanders running backs coach Anthony Lynn, a name few had considered in connection with Dallas.

“Anthony Lynn being the Cowboys’ new head coach makes perfect sense,” Ryan said during the broadcast. “Watch out for Anthony Lynn. Lynn is a way better coach than people give him credit for. He is a leader of men… and believe me, they will play hard for Anthony Lynn.”

Ryan’s endorsement immediately sparked conversation, adding Lynn’s name to a coaching carousel that already includes notable candidates like Kellen Moore, Robert Saleh, Leslie Frazier, Jason Witten, and, of course, Deion Sanders.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Lynn is indeed being considered by Dallas. Known for his disciplined approach and leadership, Lynn brings prior NFL head coaching experience, having guided the Los Angeles Chargers from 2017 to 2020. During that tenure, he led the team to the playoffs in 2018 and earned respect for his ability to develop young players.

Lynn’s work with the Commanders this season has only improved his reputation, helping Washington make it to its first NFC Championship Game since 1991, when they won the Super Bowl.

While current Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has captured the imagination of fans and media alike, Lynn’s proven track record in the NFL could make him a more realistic option for Dallas.

Unlike Sanders, who has yet to coach at the professional level, Lynn’s experience and no-nonsense style could align well with the Cowboys’ need for stability after a disappointing 7-10 campaign.

Coaching Isn’t the Cowboys’ Only Struggle

The Cowboys’ struggles this season have put owner Jerry Jones under the microscope. Criticism has ranged from poor roster decisions to the ongoing issue of AT&T Stadium’s sunlight glare interfering with key plays, leaving fans frustrated and calling for significant change.

With the pressure mounting, the Cowboys are in desperate need of a leader who can rebuild their identity and deliver consistent results. For Ryan, Lynn fits that mold perfectly.

“Lynn is the kind of coach players will fight for,” Ryan said.

As Dallas evaluates its options, the decision will undoubtedly shape the franchise’s immediate future. Whether it’s Lynn, Sanders, or another candidate, the Cowboys’ next head coach will need to navigate sky-high expectations and the relentless spotlight that comes with leading the NFL’s most polarizing team.
