Resurfaced Video From Documentary Shows Stephen Jones Opposed Coach Prime Landing in Dallas With a Record-Setting Contract

There are rumors that Coach Prime could get hired by Dallas. However, he was not wanted by everyone the first time around as a player.

Coach Prime has done a great job of turning the Colorado Buffaloes football program around. In two years since taking the job, he has turned them into a winning team.

As a result, there are now rumors that the Dallas Cowboys are interested in luring him away from the Buffaloes and back to the NFL. However, in a resurfaced video from a documentary, Jerry Jones’ son, Stephen Jones, did not want to bring Deion Sanders to the team when he first arrived as a cornerback for the team in 1995.

Stephen Jones Opposed Bringing in Coach Prime as a Player

In a resurfaced documentary clip, it was revealed that Stephen (who currently serves as the Cowboys’ executive vice president, CEO, and director of player personnel) was not a fan of bringing in Sanders as a player in the 1995 NFL season.

Although Sanders was viewed as arguably the best cornerback in the league, Stephen had an issue with how much money he would be making on the contract. He worried that other players on the team would not support one of their teammates making so much more money than them.

“I was our cap-ologist at the time. I was really the guy learning the cap. Had a really good feel for it. Jerry comes in there and he’s smiling ear to ear and he says, ‘Guess what?’ and I say, ‘What?” and he say, ‘Deion’s coming to Dallas.'” Stephen said in the documentary.

“And he goes, ‘It’s very simple. We give him a $13 million signing bonus and three years of minimum salaries,’ and I go, ‘That’s record-setting; that’s not going to sit well with our team,’ and I go, ‘We can’t do that,’ and he goes, ‘Well I already did it.'”

Jerry then joked in the documentary and said with a laugh that Stephen shoved him to the wall with his forearm. Stephen then spoke about this incident in the clip.

“Of course, I took a deep breath and he said, ‘Look, here’s what we’ll do; I can already tell you we’ll be able to sell Troy, Michael, and them that this is gonna be good for us, doesn’t hurt us under the cap,'” Stephen said, referring to team stars Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin.

Jerry then talked about how he had a team meeting where he showed Prime Time’s salary to the team and asked if they wanted him. The answer was a resounding yes. It turned out to be a good decision because the Cowboys won the Super Bowl in 1995.
