The Buffalo Bills suffered a blow in their Wild Card Weekend matchup with the Denver Broncos as running back Ray Davis was shaken up. While not the starting RB, Davis has established himself as a reliable option to spell James Cook this season.
Let’s examine what happened to Davis and the latest injury update on the back.
What Happened to Ray Davis?
On a passing play, Davis was hit by Broncos defender Brandon Jones in a play that drew a flag. Jones was penalized for hitting a defenseless receiver. Davis initially lay on the field before being able to leave for the locker room under his own power. However, he was closely escorted by two medical personnel.

Brutal helmet-to-helmet shot & immediately goes down.
Backboard was initially brought out but he was able to get up & walk off under own power. Avoided the worst.

The Bills announced that Davis is being evaluated for a head injury. We will have to wait until he has undergone the full range of tests to know for sure, but the situation did not look good for Davis on first viewing.
At the time of his injury, Davis was largely in a timeshare with Ty Johnson for the backup RB role. Johnson had two carries to Davis’ one, while the play that Davis was hurt on was the first target for either of them before Johnson later caught a touchdown.
The Bills’ running game has been key in this game, with Cook rushing for 115 yards on 21 carries, Josh Allen for 42 yards, and Johnson and Davis combined for 15 yards on three carries.
Entering the playoffs, Davis was second on the team in carries behind Cook. He had 113 carries for 442 yards and three touchdowns, with a success rate of 45.1%. Davis’ 3.9 yards per attempt was a full yard lower than Cooks’ at 4.9 and 1.3 below Johnson’s at 5.2. Davis had been more efficient in the receiving game, catching 17 of 19 targets for 189 yards and three touchdowns with a success rate of 63.2%.
