Ranking the NFL’s Best WR Trios: Eagles Move Up After Jahan Dotson Trade

After acquiring Jahan Dotson, the Philadelphia Eagles rise as one of the top WR trios across the entire NFL. Which team tops the list?

Following the trade of Jahan Dotson from the Washington Commanders to the Philadelphia Eagles, it’s safe to say that the Eagles’ already impressive wide receiver group got a bump with its latest addition.

Dotson was a first-round selection from Penn State in 2022, selected by Washington with the 16th pick in the draft. Since being drafted two seasons ago, Dotson started 26 games for Washington, totaling 84 receptions for 1,041 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Now that the Eagles have added another pass catcher for Jalen Hurts, how does their wide receiver trio stack up to the rest of the league?

Top 10 WR Trios in the NFL

    10) Los Angeles Rams

WRs: Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua, Demarcus Robinson

Just two seasons ago, Cooper Kupp was among the league’s top receivers, leading the league in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947) and receiving touchdowns (16). In this same season, Kupp would go on to win the 2021 Offensive Player of the Year Award, become a Super Bowl champion, and earn Super Bowl LVI’s Most Valuable Player Award.

Since then, Kupp has been struck with injuries, playing just 21 games across the last two seasons.

While injuries have kept him off the field these past two seasons, Kupp should still be recognized as one of the league’s best pass catchers.

Puke Nacua broke the rookie records last season in receptions and receiving yards, finishing the year with 105 receptions for 1,486 yards across a full 17-game season. Paired with Matthew Stafford once again, Nacua is expected to begin this season as he ended last year.

As the WR3 on the Los Angeles Rams‘ depth chart, Demarcus Robinson spent six seasons in Kansas City, playing in Baltimore for the 2022 season and joining the Rams last year. Robinson was more of a rotational piece, ending last year with 39 receptions for 371 yards and four touchdowns.

    9) Cincinnati Bengals

WRs: Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Andrei Iosivas

While this wide receiver group lost Tyler Boyd to free agency, the Cincinnati Bengals should still be seen as one of the top groups in the league.

Since being drafted out of LSU in 2021, Ja’Marr Chase has been one of the most reliable wide receivers in the league. Through three seasons in the NFL, Chase has caught 268 passes for 3,717 yards and 29 touchdowns, hauling in an impressive 13 scores his rookie season.

Tee Higgins signed the franchise tag this offseason, giving him at least one more season to run it back with Joe Burrow and the Bengals. Higgins has been a four-year starter for Cincinnati, catching over 250 passes for 3,684 yards and 24 touchdowns.

These two receivers give opposing defensive coordinators fits, trying to scheme ways to keep them both from performing well.

As the third option in this offense, Princeton product Andrei Iosivas adds a unique athleticism to the Bengals’ air attack. Along with football, Iosivas was a star on the Princeton track and field team, leaving school as a highly decorated track athlete on top of his football career.

Iosivas heads into his second season with the Bengals looking to make a bigger impact without Boyd.

    8) Seattle Seahawks

WRs: DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, Jaxon Smith-Njigba

Standing 6’4″ and weighing in at 235 pounds, DK Metcalf is a true big-body receiver in the NFL, and for five seasons, he’s been recognized as one of the top pass catchers in the league. With nearly 5,500 yards under his belt up to this point in his career, Metcalf has consistently been at the table of top receivers in the league year after year.

As a receiver who can line up anywhere on the field and see success, Tyler Lockett is a true pillar of consistency. Lockett has never played fewer than 15 games in a season through his nine-year career with the Seattle Seahawks. Last season, Lockett saw a dip in production, missing out on his fifth straight 1,000-yard season. Heading into Year 10, Lockett continues to remain Mr. Consistent.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba was drafted out of Ohio State in 2023 as the 20th overall selection for Seattle as one of the top receiver prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft. Smith-Njigba was coming off a hamstring injury sustained in 2022, making him somewhat of a risk to draft with a first-round pick. However, after outperforming both Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave in the 2021 collegiate season, the talent is clearly there.

    7) Tampa Bay Buccaneers

WRs: Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan

Mike Evans has been one of the top receivers in the league for years. In his 10 seasons as a receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Evans has had over 1,000 yards each year. Evans tied for the NFL lead in receiving touchdowns (13) last season, showing that even at 31 years old, he’s one of the top receivers in the league.

Chris Godwin creates a great pairing opposite his counterpart, Evans. Godwin is entering the 2024 season with three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. One area Godwin lacks is touchdowns, combining for just 10 in the last three seasons combined.

Rounding out Tampa Bay’s wide receiver trio is rookie Jalen McMillan. He was drafted in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, spending four seasons with the Washington Huskies. In 2022, McMillan hauled in 79 receptions for 1,098 yards and nine touchdowns, making him an intriguing option coming into the season. McMillan joins a great group to learn from.

    6) Minnesota Vikings

WRs: Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Jalen Nailor

Justin Jefferson is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, if not the best. And given his new contract, the Minnesota Vikings believe this, too. Through his first three seasons in the NFL, Jefferson set the record for most receptions (324) and receiving yards (4,825). Without a doubt, at this point, Jefferson has cemented himself as one of the best receivers in the league, and that’s not changing this season.

Jordan Addison nearly ended his rookie year with 1,000 receiving yards, coming 89 yards short of the milestone. Addison’s 10 touchdowns are plenty impressive, as he led the NFL among rookie wide receivers in touchdown catches. That was even after Kirk Cousins missed the majority of last season due to an Achilles injury.

Given the loss of K.J. Osborn, the Vikings slide down this list a bit. Jalen Nailor is Minnesota’s third wide receiver, and he’s entering his third season with the Vikings. Last season, Nailor was hardly utilized, making this an important season for the third-year receiver out of Michigan State.

    5) San Francisco 49ers

WRs: Deebo Samuel Sr., Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings

With Brandon Aiyuk still in San Francisco, this group remains among the best trios in the league.

Deebo Samuel Sr. is one of the top offensive gadget players in the NFL, as he’s able to line up just about anywhere on the field and dominate. Over the last two seasons, Samuel has missed a few games due to injury, but when he’s on the field, he’s consistently one of the best athletes among the group. Totaling over 1,100 all-purpose yards and 12 touchdowns last season, he remains one of the top receivers in the league.

While the drama surrounding Aiyuk makes his future with the 49ers uncertain, his talents on the football field are undeniable. Last season, Aiyuk totaled over 1,300 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Considering the other mouths to feed on this offense, this is impressive.

Drafted in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Jauan Jennings has been a rotational piece with the 49ers ever since. Jennings will be battling 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall, as Pearsall adds a unique athleticism to an offense that’s already full of playmakers.

    4) Philadelphia Eagles

WRs: A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson

Following their trade for Dotson, the Eagles nearly crack the top three wide receiver trios in the NFL.

As Philly’s WR1, A.J. Brown is consistently considered one of the top wide receivers in the league. When Tennessee traded Brown to the Eagles, many Titans fans were sad, while many Eagles fans were jumping for joy. In his two seasons with the Eagles, Brown has combined for 2,952 yards and 18 touchdowns.

After winning the Heisman in 2020, DeVonta Smith had many doubters heading into the draft, given his slim stature. Many were skeptical if his frame could hold up in the NFL. But since being drafted 10th overall, it’s safe to say Smith has transitioned into the league just fine.

As their newest addition, Dotson wraps up this wide receiver trio. In his two seasons with Washington, Dotson never reached over 600 receiving yards. However, he found the end zone 11 times across 26 starts. Pairing up with a quarterback like Jalen Hurts could be what Dotson needed to take that next step.

    3) Miami Dolphins

WRs: Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Odell Beckham Jr.

The Miami Dolphins check in as the third-best receiving trio in the league.

Tyreek Hill has consistently made a case for being the best receiver in the NFL, given that very few defenders can even keep up with him. Last year, in his eighth season, Hill led the league in receiving yards (1,799) and tied Mike Evans for the lead in receiving touchdowns with 13. As he heads into another season with head coach Mike McDaniel, Hill doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

Jaylen Waddle is another receiver who adds unreal game speed to Miami, making the Dolphins an offense that thrives off speed. Waddle missed a few games last season. However, he still finished the year with over 1,000 yards. As he looks to enter the year healthy, Waddle can have an Offensive Player of the Year-like season in 2024.

While his prime is behind him, the Dolphins added veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to the mix this offseason, rounding out their offense. Beckham’s last couple of seasons have been hindered by injury. However, Beckham’s hands pair nicely with Hill and Waddle’s dashing speed.

    2) Chicago Bears

WRs: DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze

Before drafting Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Chicago seemingly learned from its Justin Fields experiment and made sure the team’s new potential franchise quarterback would have the tools he needs to succeed.

DJ Moore cemented himself as one of the top receivers in the NFL with a career-best 2023 campaign, where he caught 96 passes for 1,364 yards and eight touchdowns. With Williams under center this season, Moore’s production is expected to rise.

Preceding their selection of Williams in the 2024 NFL Draft, Ryan Poles brought in another weapon to the arsenal, adding Keenan Allen to the Bears’ receiver room. Allen joins the Bears after one of the best seasons of his career, as he hauled in a career-best 108 passes for 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns. Allen is entering his 12th NFL season.

Rounding out this trio is the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Rome Odunze of Washington. Odunze was considered one of the top receivers in this year’s draft class, and alongside Moore and Allen, the Bears have a potentially lethal wide receiver trio heading into the season.

    1) Houston Texans

WRs: Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, Tank Dell

This offseason, the Houston Texans further invested in their offense and quarterback C.J. Stroud by adding another star pass catcher, acquiring four-time Pro Bowl receiver Stefon Diggs.

Diggs, following stints in Minnesota and Buffalo, joins his third team since being drafted in 2015. In his nine-year career thus far, Diggs has totaled nearly 10,000 receiving yards and 67 receiving touchdowns, making him undoubtedly an upgrade over any receiver Houston had heading into the season.

Nico Collins, drafted in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, made a third-year jump last season, catching 80 passes for 1,297 yards and 11 eight touchdowns. In 2021 and 2022, Collins combined for 927 yards and three touchdowns off 70 receptions. If Collins can build off his 2023 production, Stroud and the Texans’ offense are in good hands.

As the third receiver of the NFL’s top trio, Tank Dell was having an impressive start to his NFL career, reaching over 700 yards and seven touchdowns through just 12 games, before a broken fibula ended his season.

Each Texans receiver has a unique skill set they bring to the table, making them the strongest group in the league.
