Fox Sports radio host Jason Smith has labeled this offseason’s coaching cycle “very uninspiring” earlier this week. While discussing the upcoming season and the coaching movement this offseason on “The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon,” Smith outlined his belief that the job openings this year were not too intriguing or interesting for head coaching candidates.
What Did Jason Smith Say About the 2025 Offseason?
Smith made clear that the vacant head coaching positions that are available this year are not too interesting and are not great scenarios for any new coach.
“The openings are usually a little more exciting as well. But, when it’s the Jets and the Patriots, all the bottom-feeding teams are just terrible. I mean, the Bears were the best by default. I mean, think about that, when the Bears are the best opening, what does that tell you about where the openings are? Like all the openings weren’t good, it’s a very uninspiring cycle,” he stated.
Analysis of Jason Smith’s Comments
Though Smith does not believe so, all of the head coaching opportunities this offseason had some intriguing parts to them. Whether it be standout tight end Brock Bowers in Las Vegas, superstar wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. in Jacksonville, or elite wide receiver CeeDee Lamb in Dallas, it is evident that all the openings had interesting dynamics and exciting players.
Regarding the team’s Smith referred to, namely the Jets, Patriots, and Bears, all three openings present an exciting challenge and are some of the most iconic franchises in the history of the NFL.
The Jets are only one year removed from having one of the league’s top defenses. Furthermore, they have a strong blend of youth and experience on their offense that features Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, Breece Hall, and Garrett Wilson. Though Rodgers did not look great this past year, he was fresh off his Achilles injury that may have impacted his performance.
Regarding the Patriots, they are one of the winningest franchises in NFL history and appear to be back on the path to success after some struggles since legendary QB Tom Brady left. With Drake Maye at quarterback and a lot of draft and free agent capital at their disposal this offseason, the Patriots are poised to take a step this season.
Finally, the Bears are one of the most respected and historic teams in the history of the league. Though their offense struggled this year, it has the ability to explode under the new coaching regime, with No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams at QB, DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, and Cole Kmet as receivers, and D’Andre Swift at RB.
