Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers was the nation’s top overall recruit in 2021. After initially enrolling at Ohio State, Ewers returned to his home state to play for the Longhorns.
While Ewers has yet to live up to the expectations placed upon him coming out of high school, he is still expected to be selected in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Let’s take a look at Ewers’ projection in our latest mock draft, the best landing spots for him, his scouting report, and more.
Where Did Ewers Land in Our Most Recent NFL Mock Draft?
In Pro Football Network’s 2025 NFL Mock Draft Simulator, Ewers went in the second round (No. 37 overall) to the New York Jets.
This is a bit lower than Ewers was projected to go earlier in the season, when he was often being slotted as a first-round pick. Some mock drafts have Ewers projected as a first-rounder, and it’s possible he could still climb into the top-32 picks between now and the draft.
Ewers’ Best Landing Spots in the NFL
Although Ewers might not be ranked among the top QBs in the 2025 NFL Draft, this could potentially allow him to land in a more favorable situation from a coaching and talent standpoint at the next level. Here are three potential landing spots for Ewers in the NFL.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Despite a questionable QB situation in 2025 and beyond, the Pittsburgh Steelers likely won’t be picking high enough to select one of the top prospects at the position in the NFL Draft. With Russell Wilson and Justin Fields both on a one-year deal, it remains to be seen what Pittsburgh will do this offseason, but they could be in the market for a rookie QB. It might make sense to re-sign Wilson on a short-term deal and draft Ewers as his successor.
New York Jets
The Aaron Rodgers experience hasn’t gone as planned in East Rutherford, N.J. and it’s possible his days with the Jets may be numbered. Regardless of whether Rodgers returns, the Jets need to start thinking about their long-term plan at QB. While they drafted Jordan Travis in the 2024 NFL Draft, he’s a fifth-rounder and that was the old regime. New York’s new general manager will likely want to pick a young QB of their own. Even if Rodgers returns, Ewers could sit behind him for one more season before eventually taking the reins.
Tennessee Titans
Given the struggles of Will Levis in Tennessee, the Titans could look to add some much-needed help at QB in the 2025 NFL Draft. Since Tennessee could opt to target a different position in the first round, Ewers could make sense in the second. Ewers doesn’t quite have Levis’ arm strength, but he’s a much more natural off-platform passer with better accuracy and control in high-pressure situations.
Ewers’ Scouting Report
Here’s a glimpse at PFN’s scouting report on Ewers:
“Ewers has a well-documented five-star pedigree, and his elite composite arm talent has drawn the awe of onlookers for years on end. But that ranking has also contributed to lots of residual hype in his draft-eligible phase — and in truth, he has more work to do.
“Ewers’ arm elasticity is special, and it allows him to remain a passing threat from virtually any platform. He has more than enough strength to pair with that angle freedom, and while he’s not overly explosive or fast, he is quick enough to be a modest creative presence.
“Going further, the high-end flashes of execution where Ewers is able to channel these tools are very impressive. He can layer pace and touch beautifully on vertical and seam throws, and he does flash the ability to recognize opportunities pre-snap and capitalize.
“Unfortunately, at this moment in his career, Ewers’ execution is still very inconsistent on a down-to-down basis, and much of it stems from his mechanics. While he’s fluid and flexible as a thrower, he also has a frustratingly lax, free-styling mechanical nature that can run counter to optimal timing and alignment. While Ewers’ arm elasticity can correct imperfect mechanics to a degree, his accuracy to all thirds can be inconsistent because of his lacking base discipline.
“Additionally, as a processor, his progression work and anticipation also require more consistency. Because he’s not an elite athlete or creative threat, Ewers needs to refine his operational game and learn to play with more mechanical control and intent.”
Quinn Ewers’ 2024 Season Stats and Game Breakdowns
Ewers has missed two games for the Longhorns in 2024 due to an abdomen strain. Despite the hype surrounding Texas backup QB Arch Manning, Ewers will officially reclaim his role as the team’s starting QB against Oklahoma.
Here’s how Ewers has performed through his first three games of the season in 2024.
Completions: 206
Attempts: 306
Completion Percentage: 67.3%
Passing Yards: 2,307
Passing Touchdowns: 24
Interceptions: 7
Ewers’ best game was a 333-yard, five-touchdown performance against the Florida Gators, leading Texas to a 49-17 win.
Ewers also had an impressive showing against No. 10 Michigan. Despite facing one of the best teams in the nation, Ewers was able to lead the Longhorns to a rather convincing 31-12 victory. Ewers completed 24 of 36 attempts for 246 yards, three passing touchdowns, and no interceptions.
Ewers struggled and was briefly benched during Texas’ home loss to the Georgia Bulldogs on October 19. He passed for 211 yards with two touchdowns and one interception as the Longhorns’ second-half rally fell short in the 30-15 defeat.
The Longhorns used both Ewers and backup Arch Manning in their 17-7 win over Texas A&M on Nov. 30. It remains to be seen if Manning will also play in the SEC Championship.
When Is Ewers Playing Next?
Ewers and the No. 2 Texas Longhorns will face off against the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 4 p.m. ET in the SEC Championship Game. The game will air on ESPN.
Ewers and his team will aim to improve their record to 12-1 on the season.
