With not even a full week remaining until NFL free agency begins, things are starting to heat up. The official new league year begins on March 13 with the legal tampering period starting just two days earlier. Here’s a tracker of everything the Pittsburgh Steelers do in free agency when it comes to any signings, rumors, news, or anything else.
Pittsburgh Steelers Free Agency News and Rumors
As of March 8 at 5:30 p.m. ET, the Steelers have $18.4 million in available cap space, according to Over the Cap. This doesn’t include future moves that could be made in the form of cuts or restructured contracts to create more room.
Release Mitch Trubisky, Patrick Peterson, Keanu Neal, and Others
Coming into the offseason, the Steelers needed to free up space to meet league requirements and have room to sign future draft picks and free agents. So far, the team has cut Patrick Peterson, Keanu Neal, Mason Cole, Pressley Harvin III, Mitch Trubisky, Chukwuma Okorafor, and most recently, Allen Robinson.
Here’s how much each cut freed up:
- Trubisky, Harvin, and Okorafor cleared nearly $11.5 million
- Peterson freed up $7 million
- Robinson cleared over $10 million
- Neal freed up $2.5 million in salary cap
- Cole saved the Steelers $4.75 million
Trubisky and Okorafor have since signed with new teams, the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots, respectively.
Meeting With Russell Wilson
With the Steelers only having one quarterback on the roster, Kenny Pickett, the team is clearly in the quarterback market. One of the top quarterbacks available is Russell Wilson, who was recently released by the Denver Broncos.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Wilson was in the Steelers building on Friday for a meeting between the two sides. While Wilson won’t officially be released until the new league year starts, the Broncos permitted him to speak to new teams.
In 12 seasons in the NFL, Wilson has passed for 43,653 yards, 334 touchdowns, and 106 interceptions. However, it was reported by Sports Illustrated that the Steelers view Wilson as a backup.
Visiting With Mitch Morse
The Steelers need a center after cutting Mason Cole. Mitch Morse, one of the top centers in free agency, was released by the Bills earlier this week. According to Joe Rutter of Tribune-Review Sports, Morse is scheduled to visit the Steelers ahead of free agency.
