Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the NFL. He is a terrific leader who has the respect of his peers, and his track record speaks for itself.
In addition to boasting a pair of Super Bowl rings (one as a head coach and one as an assistant), Tomlin holds the NFL record for most consecutive non-losing seasons to begin a coaching career.
While Tomlin clearly deserves a ton of credit for the Steelers’ impressive consistency over the years, he hasn’t done it alone. Let’s examine Tomlin’s coaching staff and how it has changed over the last year.

Recent Additions to the Steelers’ Coaching Staff
In the middle of the 2023 season, the Steelers parted ways with offensive coordinator Matt Canada. It was the first time since 1941 that Pittsburgh had made a midseason coaching change. Senior offensive assistant (former QBs coach) Mike Sullivan and RBs coach Eddie Faulkner took over those responsibilities until the end of the season.
Over the offseason, Pittsburgh hired Arthur Smith to run the offense. Smith enters his 17th season as an NFL coach, most recently serving as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.
Before his stint with Atlanta, Smith was on the Tennessee Titans coaching staff from 2011-2020, serving as the offensive coordinator in his final two seasons. Under Smith’s direction, the Titans’ offense became one of the best in the NFL. And despite the struggles at quarterback, Atlanta’s rushing attack thrived during his tenure.
Smith isn’t the only new offensive that the Steelers hired last offseason.
Tom Arth, the QBs coach, joined Pittsburgh after spending the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, where he served as their passing game specialist. Arth played quarterback at John Carroll University, where he started all four seasons for the Blue Streaks and set 18 program records. After going undrafted in the 2003 NFL Draft, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts and also had a brief stint with the Green Bay Packers.

After his playing days ended, Arth transitioned to coaching and became John Carroll’s co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2010-2012.
In 2013, he became the Blue Streaks’ head coach. He also had head-coaching stints at Chattanooga and Akron before joining the NFL coaching ranks in 2022.
Arth has been working closely with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields throughout the season, trying to get the most out of both quarterbacks when they have been under center.
Another recent addition is wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni, who joined the Steelers after spending 2023 with the New York Jets in the same role.
Azzanni spent 18 seasons with various college football programs before making the jump to the professional coaching ranks in 2017 as the Chicago Bears’ WRs coach. From 2018-22, he held the same title for the Denver Broncos.
The final addition to Pittsburgh’s coaching staff was offensive assistant Mateo Kambui, who spent the 2023 season under Smith as the Falcons’ offensive line assistant coach.
He was also a member of the Marlin Briscoe Coaching Fellowship for the Broncos from 2020-21. After playing center at Florida A&M, Kambui joined the school’s coaching staff as a running backs coach in 2019.
