The Pittsburgh Steelers are perpetual overachievers. Despite fielding what can only be described as the corpse of Ben Roethlisberger in 2020 and 2021 with underwhelming rosters around him, the Steelers made the playoffs in each season. Heck, they even went 8-8 with Mason Rudolph and a man nicknamed “Duck” in 2019.

Pittsburgh Steelers Offense
The Steelers finished with nine wins in Kenny Pickett’s rookie season. Their offensive line was as underwhelming on paper as a torn $100 bill. No Steelers receiver topped 900 yards. Diontae Johnson is talented, but not many teams would line up to beg him to be their No. 1.
But even with that unimpressive offensive line and an offensive coordinator that, if you asked the fanbase, only a mother could love, Pittsburgh finished 14th in EPA overall. They also very, very quietly posted the third-best rushing EPA and the fourth-best rushing success rate a season ago.
Pittsburgh’s offense should improve in 2023. Isaac Seumalo should be an improvement at left guard, and eventually, Broderick Jones should be ready to take on a starting role at left tackle. George Pickens and Calvin Austin should each look improved from their rookie seasons, and Pat Freiermuth might be ready to prove he’s one of the best TEs in the NFL.
Pittsburgh Steelers Defense
After using their first-round pick on an offensive tackle, the Steelers doubled up on defense in Round 2. Joey Porter Jr. was the first pick in the second round, and Keeanu Benton went 49th overall.
Benton already appears to be at home on the defensive interior. A defensive backfield of Porter, Levi Wallace, Patrick Peterson, and Minkah Fitzpatrick is stout. A mix of Damontae Kazee, Keanu Neal, and Tre Norwood could cultivate some creativity in deployment.
But Pittsburgh’s defense will run through T.J. Watt, Cameron Heyward, and Alex Highsmith. The Steelers have traditionally played their defensive linemen a lot, but adding Nick Herbig and Markus Golden offers some crucial depth the team has lacked on the edge recently.
One Betting Trend To Know
The progression of this team was evident down the stretch of the season. The Steelers ended 2022 with four straight covers, according to Inside Edge.
Best Bet for the Steelers in 2023
Pittsburgh has never posted a losing record in the 16 years with Mike Tomlin as their head coach. A roster that a year ago was far worse with a rookie quarterback and an injured superstar pass rusher won nine games.
There is no reason to believe this team, which looks somewhat competitive for the first time in a few seasons, will finish with a worse record than a season ago. I’m going over 8.5 wins.
