The Philadelphia Eagles already had a bevy of first-round draft picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. Now, after a blockbuster trade with the New Orleans Saints, they’ve also accumulated an additional first-round pick in next year’s draft. Here’s how that trade shook up the 2022 NFL Draft and where the Eagles sit in terms of draft picks ahead of April’s event.
Philadelphia Eagles draft picks in 2022
- Round 1 | Pick 13 (from HOU)
Jordan Davis, DT, Georgia - Round 2 | Pick 51
Cameron Jurgens, C, Nebraska - Round 3 | Pick 83
Nakobe Dean, LB, Georgia - Round 6 | Pick 181 (from DET)
Kyron Johnson, EDGE, Kansas - Round 6 | Pick 198 (from PIT via JAX)
Grant Calcaterra, TE, SMU
Philadelphia already owned the rights to three first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. They’ve used that capital in a trade with New Orleans to acquire a couple of future picks as the team continues to build using the draft. When all was said and done, Philadelphia and New Orleans were each left with a total of four picks within five selections of one another.
The Eagles sent pick Nos. 16 and 19, as well as a sixth-round pick (No. 194), to the Saints in exchange for picks Nos. 18, 101, and 237. Philadelphia also received a first-round pick in 2023 and a second-round pick in 2024. Essentially, Philadelphia moved down two spots from No. 16 to No. 18 and acquired a future first-round and second-round pick in exchange for No. 19. But they weren’t done, as they acquired Tennessee Titans WR A.J. Brown in exchange for pick No. 18 and No. 101 in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Philadelphia then used their draft picks to trade up on draft day. The Eagles sent a boatload to the Houston Texans to move up two spots. Philly sent pick Nos. 15, 124, 162, and 166 to move up to No. 13. However, it all made sense as they coveted Georgia DT Jordan Davis, and it was leaked that the Baltimore Ravens (sitting at No. 14) were going to draft Davis. A big man with freakish athleticism, Davis will take the throne from Fletcher Cox sooner as opposed to later.
Philadelphia Eagles 2022 NFL Draft team needs
The Eagles are a team of few vital needs, but they still own many. Although they made the playoffs a year ago, their an aging group with holes left on their roster. As it stands now, their top need is a playmaker at cornerback as well as in the wide receiver room. Philly likely will look to improve their linebacking corps as well as secure additional players in the secondary at safety.
Philadelphia and New Orleans have very different needs, so their four picks within five selections will certainly be a tipping point for the rest of the first round. Here are the Eagles’ top needs after their trade with the Saints.
- Cornerback
- Linebacker
- Safety
- Wide Receiver
- EDGE
