The Philadelphia Eagles‘ 2023 season didn’t end how they wanted it to, falling in the first round of the playoffs. As a result, the organization let go of offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, as well as other staff members. They’ve since hired Kellen Moore as their new offensive coordinator.
With legendary quarterback Peyton Manning coaching at the 2024 Pro Bowl Games, he was asked about his thoughts on Moore’s hiring. What did he have to say?
Peyton Manning Shares Thoughts on Eagles Hiring Kellen Moore
Moore has been an offensive coordinator in the NFL since 2019, when the Dallas Cowboys promoted him from quarterbacks coach. He spent 2019-2022 with the Cowboys and then spent 2023 as the offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers.
“I like Kellen, obviously,” said Manning. “I’ve known Kellen since he was in college, and he came down to our football camp, and we stayed in touch.” Moore was the quarterback at Boise State from 2008-2011 before going undrafted in 2012. During his time at Boise State, he was a two-time first-team All-WAC and one-time first-team All-MWC.
Kellen then spent six years in the NFL, starting just two games for Dallas. In those games, he passed for 779 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions. He became the Cowboys’ quarterback coach after retiring in 2017.
“I think he’s a good play-caller. You know, changes are part of the offseason every single year, but I think Jalen [Hurts] will like playing for him,” said Manning. “You know, I like Nick [Sirianni’s] system. So, you know, I imagine there’s some type of kind of hybrid of what Nick wants to do and what Kellen wants to do as long as you’re working together on that.”
In 2023, the Chargers were ranked 18th in total offense, averaging 329.4 yards per game and scoring 36 touchdowns. They did, however, suffer a plethora of injuries, including one to starting quarterback Justin Herbert.
During his time with Dallas, he oversaw three top-10 offenses, including two top-ranked units in 2019 and 2021. In 2019, the Cowboys averaged 431.5 yards per game and scored 49 touchdowns. In 2021, they averaged 407 yards per game and scored 64 TDs.
“I think it’s got to be, you know, focused around Jalen and what he likes,” said Manning. “I think it’s a good hire for the Eagles.” Prior to the 2023 season, Hurts signed a major five-year, $255 million extension.

However, Hurts had a down season in 2023. He passed for 3,858 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. Additionally, he did have 157 rushing attempts for 605 yards and 15 scores. He was, however, a major part in the Eagles 1-6 slide to end their 2023 season, including the playoffs.
