Pete Carroll is the head coach and executive vice president for the Seattle Seahawks. The highlight of Carroll’s NFL coaching career was during the Seahawk’s reign as NFC champions, resulting in back-to-back Super Bowl appearances, including the first and only Super Bowl championship in franchise history.
The Seahawks mini-dynasty was best known for a punishing defense, highlighted by the Legion of Doom, led by CB Richard Sherman and S Earl Thomas, a pulverizing running game anchored by RB Marshawn Lynch, and a timely passing attack led by QB Russell Wilson. The Seahawks were one of the most complete teams in recent memory.
Before his success as the Seahawks frontman, Carroll built his coaching legend up during his tenure in Southern California as the USC Trojans head coach. He built a Trojans’ dynasty led by QB Matt Leinart and RBs Reggie Bush and LenDale White. The Trojans were as dominant as any team in college football in quite some time.
The Trojans won back-to-back national titles and could have joined rarified air with a third consecutive title had it not been for QB Vince Young’s heroics, as the Texas Longhorns upset the Trojans to win a national championship 41-38 in the 2006 Rose Bowl.

Before building the USC program, Carroll coached in the NFL, but on the opposite coast. He served quick stints as the New York Jets and New England Patriots head coach, respectively, showing marginal success during his two tenures with those organizations.

Carroll himself was a tremendous athlete growing up. He played football, baseball, and basketball during his high school football career — as QB, WR, and DB. Carroll had a short collegiate career, playing safety for the University of Pacific. He would later try out for the World Football League but wouldn’t make the cut.
Carroll’s playing career never matched his coaching career, which has spanned six decades.
