While he’s regarded as one of the best running backs entering the 2024 NFL Draft, Florida State running back Trey Benson feels he has not been getting the respect he deserves.
Trey Benson Evaluating His Own Game
Benson has been impressive over the last two years in the Seminoles’ backfield, rushing for a combined 1,995 yards and 23 touchdowns while adding a receiving and kickoff return touchdown apiece.
He has proven to scouts that he is explosive, and his skill set can be somewhat deceiving relative to his size. Benson has experienced this on the field when going up against defenders.
“You know, I make cuts sometimes, but really just running and not being caught. You know, just using my speed and my power because people, they underestimate my speed because of my size. You know, most DBs do that, and linebackers. But yeah, I just get to the edge and go.”
During his high school years, Benson ran a 40-yard dash time under 4.5 seconds, showing off his speed at 220 pounds. Benson doesn’t understand why defenders and scouts have underestimated his speed on the field.
“I have no idea. I feel it may look like I’m running slower than what it is, but in person, it’s a lot faster.”
While he’s amply proven his second-level speed, some scouts have expressed concern about his breakaway speed. Others have noted he needs to develop his pass-catching skills to round himself out as an athlete.

Most experts believe Benson is the best running back in the 2024 class and should be the first player selected at the position.
How long he’ll have to wait to hear his name called remains to be seen, with many believing he’ll likely be a Day 2 pick as a result of his position becoming somewhat devalued despite there being two first-round rushers a year ago. Regardless, expect Benson to be high on the draft board of every running back-needy team.
