Latest Patriots Practice Casts Further Doubt on O-Line Starter’s Week 1 Status

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Patriots held their second Week 1 practice on Thursday. Let’s review what we saw during the media access portion, including another concerning update on a key offensive starter.

New England Patriots Practice Attendance l Thursday, Sept. 9

The following players were absent from Thursday’s practice:

    • G Sidy Sow
    • DE Jotham Russell

Sow hasn’t practiced since suffering an ankle injury during the Patriots’ preseason finale against the Washington Commanders.

The second-year guard was listed as limited on Wednesday’s injury report. At this point, it seems unlikely he’ll be able to play in Sunday’s road game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Russell’s injury situation remains unclear. A former Australian rugby player, Russell is a developmental prospect on New England’s practice squad.

Assorted Notes from Thursday’s Patriots Practice

    • Offensive tackle Vederian Lowe participated more on Thursday than during Wednesday’s practice, when he was limited due to an abdomen injury. Whether Lowe can play Sunday remains to be seen, but he’s trending upward.
    • Practice squad guard Michael Jordan continued to be heavily involved. He and Nick Leverett are the top candidates to play left guard should Sow be ruled inactive.
    • Safety Jabrill Peppers wore a normal helmet after rocking a logo-adorned guardian cap during Wednesday’s practice. Before practice, Peppers said he still was undecided about whether to wear a guardian cap on Sunday and wanted to test both this week to get a better feel for the differences.

    • Here are some additional highlights from Thursday’s practice. The Patriots will be back on the field Friday before traveling to Cincinnati on Saturday.
