The longstanding debate over who the greatest player in NBA history is — Michael Jordan or LeBron James — has gained an intriguing new voice in New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.
While many from Maye’s generation consider James the GOAT, the 22-year-old quarterback offered a different perspective during a Feb. 4 appearance on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football.”
Patriots’ Drake Maye Surprises With Michael Jordan-LeBron James GOAT Answer
“I grew up watching LeBron and what a player he is,” Maye said. “It can’t take me away from my roots. Michael Jordan is a North Carolina guy, and I think it’s the easy answer for me with Michael Jordan.”
Maye’s answer drew applause from the NFL analysts. “We have hope for the young ones!” exclaimed Brandt. “We’re gonna be OK!”
There’s hope for the future.

Considering his deep connection to Maye’s home state of North Carolina, Jordan has the edge. Maye played college football at UNC, the very school where Jordan launched his legendary basketball career. Despite growing up watching James dominate the NBA, that loyalty to Carolina’s most famous athlete ultimately swayed Maye’s decision.
Given his age, Maye’s take comes as a surprise. Many young sports fans who didn’t witness Jordan’s prime firsthand tend to favor James, citing his longevity, all-around versatility, and record-breaking achievements. But for Maye, Jordan’s legacy remains steadfast: six championships, an undefeated NBA Finals record, and an undeniable cultural impact.
The GOAT debate will never have a definitive answer, but Maye’s perspective gives us hope for the future. Whether it’s Jordan’s dominance in the 1990s or James’ sustained excellence, the discussion will live on.
Patriots Find Post-Tom Brady Answer at Quarterback in Maye
As many teams that struggle after their franchise quarterback “retires,” the Patriots have been looking for their post-Tom Brady answer.
When New England selected Maye in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, expectations were high, but few thought he would be a starter in his rookie season.
Though his debut campaign drew mixed reviews, Maye exceeded expectations, positioning him as a potential franchise quarterback. New England, coming off a disappointing 2023 season, needed stability at quarterback after the failed Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe experiments. Despite initial questions about his readiness, Maye quickly adapted to the NFL and improved each week (2024 QB+: 74.3, 19th).
Maye will never be Brady, but with further development, he may just be good enough to lead the Patriots for years to come.
