Patrick Mahomes has solidified himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. However, the Kansas City Chiefs superstar, like any other great athlete, has a superstitious side.
Rumors circulated last season, but is it true that Mahomes wears the same pair of red underwear every game?
Patrick Mahomes’ Underwear Superstition
As the Chiefs prepare for the Super Bowl rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles, the players’ personal lives have taken over the news, particularly Travis Kelce, who recently started dating pop sensation Taylor Swift. But Mahomes has found himself in the news for an even more … unique reason.
On Monday, the quarterback was a guest on ESPN’s “ManningCast” with Peyton and Eli Manning. On the podcast, Eli Manning said former Chiefs backup quarterback Chad Henne confirmed that Mahomes wears the same pair of underwear for every game.
“I love a good superstition, but couldn’t it just be something like eating the same pregame meal?” asked Eli Manning. “Did it have to be the red underwear?”
Mahomes cleared the air, explaining why the tradition is meaningful to him.
“Well, my wife Brittany got them for me, so I’m not throwing y’all down, but I have to wear them,” Mahomes said. “At the same time, I threw them on that first season; we had a pretty good season that season.”
In his first season with the Chiefs, the team went 10-6. He also clarified a burning question: does he wash them?

“I only wear them for game day, though. They’re not too worn down; they’re not like these nasty — I clean them,” Mahomes said. “I do wash them, every once in a while at least. If we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash them. I gotta just keep it rolling. As long as I’m winning football games, I’ll keep the superstition going.”
The word originally got out when Henne mentioned it on the Adam Schefter Podcast back in February.
“Each and every day he comes in, he does his work, his notes are written a certain way [and wears] the same pair of underwear which not a lot [of] people know,” Henne said.
As Mahomes himself said, why not keep the superstition going if he is continuing to win games? The star QB turned the Chiefs into one of the best teams in the league and is still riding a hot streak of success.
Mahomes led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl win last year and had a phenomenal regular season, as he took home MVP honors. Last season, he completed 67.1% of his passes for 5,250 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
So far this season, Mahomes has continued to impress. The Chiefs are off to a 7-2 start and sit at the top of the AFC West rankings with a solid lead over the 5-5 Broncos.
Mahomes is on track to have another phenomenal season, as he has completed 68.6% of his pass attempts for 2,442 yards, 17 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
The Chiefs take on the 8-1 Eagles in what should be an exciting Monday Night Football matchup. And if Mahomes continues to wear his lucky underwear, he very well may lead Kansas City to a win.
