Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to make history by winning their third straight Super Bowl. They will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Feb. 9, in a rematch of Super Bowl 57.
Chiefs fans have been vocal throughout the team’s dynastic run. However, one fan in particular figures to be on Mahomes’ mind during the Super Bowl.

Patrick Mahomes’ Grandfather ‘Hanging On’ for Super Bowl 59
Due to the glitz and glam of being paid millions of dollars to play professional football, it’s easy to forget that NFL players have hardships like everyone else. However, things like this open up a perspective on their struggles that we don’t see.
Mahomes’ mother, Randi, recently shared that her father entered hospice on Jan. 24.
“I know that it has meant a lot to him,” Randi told “People” magazine of her father. “And I think he’s hanging on because he wants to see his grandson do an amazing thing or just let him play. I mean, he must be such a proud grandpa, so proud. And my mom was very proud, and his other grandparents [were too].”
She told Patrick his grandfather “is watching and is excited.” She added that, while he’s been in hospice, “the one thing that he remembers” is the date and time of the Super Bowl.
Mahomes is finishing his eighth season in the NFL, and in seven seasons as the starter, the team has made it to the AFC Championship Game or further every season. During those seven seasons, the team has made five Super Bowls (including Super Bowl 59), winning three of them.
The two-time NFL MVP will have his hands full with Philadelphia’s stifling defense on the opposing side of the field. The Eagles’ defense ranked No. 2 in PFN’s Defense+ rankings with a grade of 87.9 (B+).

Figuring out that vaunted defense will be no easy challenge for Kansas City. However, with Andy Reid calling plays and an arsenal including Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown, Kareem Hunt, and Isiah Pacheco, the Eagles’ defense will also have its work cut out for them.
The Chiefs are looking to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls. With his grandfather watching in excitement, Mahomes will presumably have him on his mind and look to put forth another big performance in the season’s biggest game.
