Patrick Mahomes was unable to fulfill his three-peat dream in New Orleans at Super Bowl 59. The Kansas City Chiefs were routed by the Philadelphia Eagles 40-22, securing the second title for the City of Brotherly Love.
The quarterback, however, isn’t mulling around as his latest business decision sees the light of day. Mahomes is set on building a sporting empire in Kansas City.
Patrick Mahomes Dips His Toes in the WNBA World
Per the Athletic, Mahomes’ group has officially applied to bring the WNBA’s 16th franchise to Kansas City. Mahomes, along with his wife Brittany Mahomes and business partners Angie Long and Chris Long, already own the Kansas City Current.
The women’s soccer team: the Current has brought tremendous success to its co-owners, and they are willing to go deeper into the women’s sports sections. Per the report, apart from Kansas City, eight other groups have also applied to bring a WNBA franchise to their cities.
This included Kevin Durant’s group vying to bring the franchise to Austin, Texas. However, Mahomes and Co. have already begun planning to have a WNBA presence in Missouri.
“(Mahomes’) group has already signed an agreement with T-Mobile Center to be the downtown stadium’s anchor tenant and that the Kansas City WNBA franchise would build a 60,000-square-foot privately financed practice facility on land the group already owns in the same area as the Current’s facility,” Chris Long stated as per the report.
Mahomes Wants Kansas City To Become a Sporting Hub
Mahomes has been a fervent supporter of sports and women’s sports in particular. He hasn’t hidden the fact that he is trying to make Kansas City a sporting capital in the Midwest. Last year, Mahomes made his intentions clear in an interview.
“I love sports, I know how much the city loves sports so let’s bring as many sports in here and showcase how great Kansas City is,” he said. The three-time Super Bowl winner also highlighted his reasons for wanting a WNBA franchise in his city.

“I know if we were able to get a WNBA team to Kansas City, it would be packed every single night,” Mahomes said during the Super Bowl build-up. “That’s just the type of atmosphere that we have. I’m hoping we can get that done and we can continue to push women’s sports forward.”
