The Kansas City Chiefs’ superstar quarterback was listed on the team’s injury report with an ankle injury but was a full participant in practice on Wednesday, Feb. 5. However, he is anticipated to start in Super Bowl 59 against the Philadelphia Eagles, as Patrick Mahomes will be looking for the Chiefs’ third straight Super Bowl championship.

What Is Patrick Mahomes’ Injury?
Mahomes played through an ankle sprain over the last few games of the regular season schedule. After suffering the injury on Dec. 15 against the Cleveland Browns, he fought through consecutive short weeks (Dec. 21 vs. the Houston Texans and Dec. 25 at the Pittsburgh Steelers) and suited up.
If not for his long break after the Christmas game against Pittsburgh (Mahomes did not play again until Jan. 18 against the Texans in the Divisional Round), the situation might have gotten worse.
However, the Chiefs rested Mahomes in Week 18 against the Denver Broncos and then had a first-round bye in the NFL playoffs. He rested for two weeks, and it has appeared to assist him in wins over Houston and the Buffalo Bills to qualify for Super Bowl 59.
Will Mahomes Play in the Super Bowl?
Mahomes was a full participant in the first practice session of Super Bowl week and is expected to play in the game. Nothing is indicating Mahomes will not be ready.
Mahomes played the last two playoff games after suffering the ankle sprain in December and performed very well, leading the Chiefs to their third straight Super Bowl appearance.
How Would Mahomes’ Absence Impact the Chiefs?
If Mahomes were unable to go, the Chiefs would start Carson Wentz, who is a proven quarterback in the league. However, Wentz is a far cry from Mahomes, and the impact on the game would be severe.

Wentz was the starting quarterback in 2017 and took the Eagles to Super Bowl 52. He is now a backup for Mahomes, and leading up to the big game, Wentz had nothing but positive things to say about Mahomes.
“It’s been fun getting to know him off the field, honestly,” Wentz said. “Everybody knows him on the field. Everybody knows him when he’s out doing appearances and doing different things, but he’s just a real genuine dude. Down to earth guy.”
