For the seventh year in a row, the Kansas City Chiefs have captured the No. 1 seed in the AFC thanks to their 15-1 record.
Although the Chiefs have the best record in the NFL, they haven’t looked like the best team in football at times, and that includes the play of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
However, Mahomes had some extra motivation to secure the top seed in the conference and the extended break and home-field advantage that will come with it.
Patrick Mahomes Wanted No. 1 Seed To Be There for the Birth of His Third Child
In the Chiefs’ 29-10 dominant victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mahomes threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns.
After the game, Mahomes revealed that he had a special reason for to wrap up the No. 1 seed: the fact that his wife, Brittany, is pregnant with the couple’s third child and she is due soon.
“I told my wife I was gonna get her the No. 1 seed so we can go have that baby,” Mahomes said after the Christmas win.

Mahomes has two other children, Sterling (3 years old) and Patrick III (2 years old).
Brittany, according to reports, is due any day now, so you can understand why he wanted to wrap up things today just in case his wife goes into labor.
Mahomes may be able to take next week off to be with his wife since the Chiefs have wrapped up the No. 1 seed, and there will be no need for him to play and risk injury since there is nothing on the line to play for over the next few weeks.
Through 16 games, Mahomes has thrown for 3,928 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with a 67.5% completion percentage. It hasn’t been Mahomes’ best season statistically, but it’s hard to argue with a 15-1 record.
Mahomes is trying to lead the Chiefs to their third consecutive Super Bowl win, which would make NFL history.
