Patrick Mahomes on Travis Kelce’s Retirement Plans
The Chiefs TE became the highest-paid tight end in the league after signing a two-year contract worth $34.25 million last offseason.
However, the three-time Super Bowl champion had his lowest regular-season yardage total since 2014, finishing with 97 receptions for 823 yards. Yet he proved his worth in the Divisional Round clash against the Houston Texans, posting a season-high 117 yards and a touchdown, including a 49-yard catch-and-run.
However, the 35-year-old couldn’t live up to the expectations in arguably the biggest game of his career. Kelce charted only four catches for 39 yards in New Orleans. The Eagles managed to hold him to zero catches in the first half.
After an underwhelming performance in the season finale, the spotlight again turned to Kelce’s future. Mahomes was asked about the tight end’s retirement plans following the Super Bowl heartbreak.
“I’ll let Travis make that decision on his own, man. He’s given so much to this team and to the NFL and been such a joy, not only for me to work with but for people to watch,” Mahomes said.

“He [Travis] knows he still has a lot of football left in him. You can see it. … He’s done enough to be a gold jacket guy and a first-ballot Hall of Famer. … He’ll get to spend some time with his family and make that decision on his own,” he concluded.
The Chiefs selected Kelce in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft with the 63rd overall pick. Since debuting in 2014, he has surpassed 800 yards receiving every season except his rookie year, eclipsing 1,000 yards seven times.
Kelce was confident about suiting up for Kansas City when asked about his career plans during Super Bowl Week.
“I love doing this. I love coming into work every day, and I still feel like I have a lot of good football left in me. … For the most part, I plan on being a Kansas City Chief and playing football,” he said.
Kelce is under contract with the Chiefs for next season and would hit free agency in 2026. It remains to be seen whether the superstar will continue to play or will hang up the cleats.
