‘I Put Us in a Bad Spot’ – Patrick Mahomes Breaks Silence After Super Bowl 59 Loss to Eagles

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes admitted he put his team in a bad spot. He also gave all the Eagles all the credit they deserve.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was gracious after the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59. He gave all the credit to his counterpart Jalen Hurts, who was the game’s Most Valuable Player.

He also admitted his faults and took ownership of the fact he turned the ball over too many times against a very good Eagles team that capitalized on those mistakes to end the Chiefs’ bid at history.

After the game, Mahomes reflected on Kansas City’s collapse and what went wrong in New Orleans.

“When you give the team 14 points, especially, a really good football team, a Super Bowl football team, then, not a lot of good things happen,” Mahomes said after the 40-22 loss. “That’s why I take ownership of this loss more than probably any loss in my entire career.

“I put us in a bad spot, even though we put up some stats at the end of the game, those stats didn’t really matter because we had already kind of lost the momentum for this entire team. So I have to be better at not turning the ball over whenever it’s not going my way, trusting my defense, trusting the rest of my team to get those stops until I can figure out what we need to do as an offense.”

Mahomes gave credit to Hurts, who backed up his claim that he’s a “winner.” Despite all the doubts and asterisks, Hurts is officially a Super Bowl champion.

“I mean, but the one thing that I’ve always respected about Jalen is that he’s a winner,” Mahomes said. “And I know that sounds some people take that as like it’s not a good thing, but you have to find ways to win with your football team that you have around you and that’s what I’ve learned in my entire career and that’s what he’s come into the NFL and done his entire career.

“If he needs to run the ball, he will run it. If he needs to throw the ball, he will throw it, and if he needs to make a big play, he will make the big the big play. I have a lot of respect for Jalen and I said it after the first Super Bowl we played against him. I said he will be back, and he was and he got the better of me today and I’m sure we’ll face each other again at some point in our careers, in a big game like this.”

By PFN’s QB+ metic, Hurts didn’t just have the advantage on Sunday; he was better on the season as a whole, finishing fourth compared to Mahomes, who took the final spot of the top 10.

Afterward, Mahomes posted the following apology to the Kansas City faithful.

“Appreciate all the love and support from #ChiefsKingdom,” Mahomes wrote on X. “I let y’all down today. I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it. Want to give thanks to God for every opportunity he has given me. We will be back.”
