Observations From the Dallas Cowboys’ Heartbreaking Last-Second Loss to the Philadelphia Eagles

What are some of the biggest takeaways from the Dallas Cowboys' painful 28-23 loss against the Philadelphia Eagles?

The Dallas Cowboys fought until the last second but ultimately fell short to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The final score of 28-23 doesn’t tell the story of how much of a rollercoaster this game was for both teams.

Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles Highlights

Here are some highlights from the game:

    • KaVontae Turpin got a touchdown on his first play back in the game after being out for seven minutes while he was in the team’s medical tent.

    • Jalen Tolbert got his first NFL touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Penalties Were an Issue for Both Teams

Penalties determined a lot of the momentum shifts in this game, especially in the last two minutes.

The one-possession battle came down to the last second when the Cowboys had a chance to score.

Within that time, the Eagles had three costly defensive penalties for 56 yards that put the Cowboys in prime position to score.

That was until the Cowboys gave up a sack on Dak Prescott and had two costly penalties of their own, putting themselves in a 3rd-and-21 position with five seconds left in the game.

Each team had 10 penalties for a total of 181 yards, but this is the third-most penalized game for the Cowboys this season.

A Shift in the Third Quarter

The Cowboys dominated in the first half of the game and went into halftime with a 17-14 lead. However, the tides shifted in the Eagles’ favor in the third quarter. The Cowboys defense had four defensive penalties in the third quarter, all of which came at costly moments and allowed the Eagles to take the lead.

The Cowboys were playing a lot of man coverage, which created difficulties for their secondary, where most of the penalties were called.

The defense struggled to find the fine line between being aggressive and not getting penalized, which led to the beginning of the end for the Cowboys.

Adjustments were not made quickly enough for the team to come back with plenty of time on the clock. In fact, it wasn’t until the final two minutes of the game that the Cowboys had a chance to win once again.

Dak Prescott’s Chemistry With CeeDee Lamb and Jake Ferguson

Despite the loss, it was another week of seeing Prescott’s chemistry fully displayed with CeeDee Lamb.

Lamb had 11 receptions for 191 yards, making it his 14th career 100-yard game.

The receiver stays open and ready to get the ball from Prescott, which allows the quarterback to play quickly.

Prescott’s chemistry and trust in Jake Ferguson were crystal clear during this showing as well.

The tight end was explosive and created big plays throughout the game. In fact, he had the most yards he has ever had in an NFL game, with seven receptions for 91 yards and one touchdown.

We are starting to see the growth and maturation of Ferguson at the right time for the Cowboys.

As Mike McCarthy opens up the playbook more, it’s safe to assume Ferguson will continue to get more attention as the season progresses.
