What Are The Best Jerseys of All Time?

While this is a subjective list, let’s break down some of the most popular and visually stunning uniforms.

    Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Creamsicle)

Some believe the Buccaneers’ creamsicle jerseys are among the ugliest in sports; others believe they’re beautiful. We fall into the latter camp.

These jerseys undoubtedly look weird. But something about them feels perfect for the Gulf Coast setting and makes them one of the coolest NFL jerseys of all time.

    New England Patriots (Home Red)

The Patriots’ modern uniforms are among the worst in the NFL. Really, their jerseys haven’t looked cool since the 1990s. But the throwback “Pat Patriot” reds? They’re some of the best jerseys in NFL history.

The red, blue, and white all pop and combine to make a color scheme perfect for a franchise called the Patriots. Thankfully, New England recently resurrected these jerseys for special throwback game days. Here’s hoping they use them even more in 2024.

    Philadelphia Eagles (Kelly Green)

These are so, so good. Thank goodness the Eagles brought them back.

Worn during the Randall Cunningham/Reggie White era, the Kelly Green jerseys are immeasurably better than Philly’s modern look, which is fine but unremarkable. The Kelly Greens strike the enviable balance of looking simultaneously fresh and classic.

    San Francisco 49ers (Scarlet Red)

There’s nothing fancy about these uniforms. They’re just clean, beautiful, and timeless. And it helps that they were worn during some of the most memorable plays in NFL history.

Nearly all versions of 49ers jerseys are great — although the blacks are questionable — but the classic home jerseys are among the best in NFL history.

San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers (Powder Blue)

    Let’s not overthink this.

The Chargers’ powder blue jerseys are the best in NFL history and on the short list of best sports jerseys of all time. The color scheme is as cool as it gets, and the bolt logo is the cherry on top. If only the Chargers could bring these jerseys to a Super Bowl.

You could make a case for this jersey being higher on the list, as it’s one of the more iconic jerseys in all of sports. Regardless, it lands on the No. 6 spot.

    Green Bay Packers (Green)

The Packers’ road white jerseys are great, too, but the home greens are a cut above. If someone asked you what colors come to mind when they think about the NFL, the Packers’ green and yellow jerseys probably would be among the answers.

The uniforms are synonymous with the history of the NFL, like Yankee Pinstripes are to Major League Baseball and Le Bleu, Blanc et Rouge are to the NHL.

Which NFL Teams Have Unveiled New Uniforms?

    New York Jets

The Jets revealed their new uniforms in April. They are a fresh look with an ode to the past, as they look to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2010.

The new look is simple, with a clean, more modern take on the team’s jerseys. They unveiled green home jerseys, white away jerseys, and a black alternate uniform, along with subtle changes to the helmet design that has the familiar old-school script Jets fans have loved for years.

Also, they removed the ‘NEW YORK’ script off the chest, the stripes on the shoulders, and the football design from their helmet. The Jets went with a more minimalistic approach to provide a fresh new look.

The Jets also unveiled their throwback uniforms, which are called “The Classic.” The throwback combines elements of the Super Bowl III team with the familiar design of the uniform worn throughout the late 1990s and 2000s.

“We work for the fans,” said Jets Chairman Woody Johnson. “They have consistently asked for us to return to our roots and we heard them. The new uniforms are explicitly designed to look and feel like the New York Jets while refreshing the club’s iconic logo – viewed by fans as our most identifiable mark.”

“Recreating our uniforms, as well as developing a modernized look for the organization signifies our commitment to progress, remaining innovative, and delivering excellence to our players and fans,” said Jets president Hymie Elhai. “Elevating the New York Jets identity with a refreshed uniform embodies the unity, and a timeless sense of the Sack Exchange era, while empowering every player and generations of fans to stand out and stay true to our team’s heritage.”

The Jets will wear their “The Classic” throwback uniforms when they host the Buffalo Bills in a Monday Night Football showdown at MetLife Stadium in Week 6.

    Detroit Lions | New Uniforms

The Detroit Lions came up with a new look for the 2024 NFL season.

Lions President Rod Wood teased the release by saying the Lions would have “one of the great uniforms” in the NFL. This raised eyebrows among the fan base, but the jerseys seemingly delivered, as they have been well received.

The Lions also unveiled “Motor City Muscle” alternate uniforms, which feature a new all-black look that’s very different from their usual jerseys, pants, and helmets.

Here’s how the Lions’ website describes the new alternate uniforms.

“Heavily influenced by the grit and swagger our team brings to the field, this alternate uniform reintroduces black to the Lions on-field closet. A reinterpretation of a jersey worn in the late 1990’s/early 2000’s by former players including head coach Dan Campbell, it bears the Lions wordmark across the chest so whoever lines up across from us knows they’re in for a long day.

“The continued use of the blue trim inside the collar ensures that whether worn at Ford Field or on the road, a blue-collar mentality remains a constant. Inscribed with ‘Motor City,’ the collar also pays tribute to Detroit and the Ford Family’s iconic place in American history.”

As for the helmets, they are described as “matte metallic Honolulu Blue” with an “oil black facemask” and a “leaping Lion logo in black with silver accents,” and the “striping mirrors [the] primary helmet in black with silver accents.”

The Lions are now donning a fresh new look with reminders of the past. With one of the best color schemes in the NFL, Detroit made some changes to its home and away jerseys while also introducing a truly innovative all-black alternative look.

    Denver Broncos | New Uniforms

The Broncos also overhauled their uniforms for the first time since the 1997 season.

Heading into this season, Denver announced the creation of the “Mile High Collection” uniforms, which includes nine primary uniform combinations with specific features of the Rocky Mountain region and the Broncos’ existing logo and colors.

“This has been a thoughtful, collaborative journey that’s involved us listening to voices throughout all of Broncos Country to design the Mile High Collection, our modern and inspirational new uniforms for the Denver Broncos,” President Damani Leech said in a statement.

The Broncos have not made the playoffs since they won Super Bowl L in Peyton Manning’s final football game. In the second year with head coach Sean Payton at the helm of the franchise, Denver is looking to put their recent struggles behind them and usher in a fresh start with these new uniforms.

    Houston Texans | New Uniforms

The Texans’ new uniforms received quite the reception from the NFL world.

A photo of the new-look uniforms leaked early, prompting Texans owner Cal McNair to share photos of their redesigned jerseys, stating, “Leaked pic? How about a real photo of Nico [Collins] and Tank [Dell]!? Way more to come in April!”

In April, they officially unveiled their new uniforms. While they kept their traditional logo for their navy home jerseys and their white away jerseys, they have added two new interesting-styled helmets for two additional combinations.

One has an all-red look with a horn on both sides, representing a bull-styled look. The navy uniform features a Houston-esque ‘H’ with a star accent and baby blue writing, tied together with a sparkled midnight navy helmet that matches the jersey.

“Today, for the first time since 2000, we are so proud to reveal our new uniforms,” Texans’ owner Cal McNair said when the uniforms were released. “They are even more special because they are inspired by and for our fans. Our fans asked us to be more H-Town, and we delivered. They were with us every step of the way and there’s truly something for everyone over the four uniforms.”

Each look is unique but stays true to the area it represents, and the NFL community has widely viewed it as a job well done.

    Minnesota Vikings | Alternate Uniform

The Vikings have a recognizable brand and a rich history associated with purple and gold.

However, with their new look, they’re changing things up a bit. The team introduced their “Winter Warrior” all-white alternate uniforms back in June, and fans loved them.

Here’s how the Vikings’ website describes the all-white uniforms: “Designed to be the coldest in the league, the icy look features white-on-white jerseys and pants, paired with the first usage of a white helmet in franchise history. The Vikings will debut the uniforms at their Winter Whiteout game on Monday, Dec. 16 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

“The Vikings unveiled their new ‘Winter Warrior’ uniforms, featuring white alternate jerseys and pants paired with the first usage of a white helmet in franchise history. The uniforms are accented with metallic gray, including the face mask, and purple.”

These all-white uniforms are the perfect way to switch up their typical look they have famously donned for decades. Although they play in a dome, their newest look pays homage to Minnesota’s cold winters in a very cool way.
